Do cats become aware of the effect of catnip?

Asked by LostInParadise (32168points) October 1st, 2018

There is a book of cat photographs that was published recently with the title Cats On Catnip. The cats in the book really look strung out. Assuming that the cats get high on catnip. are they able to associate the stuff with the feeling? Would it be a pleasant feeling? If catnip were readily available, would they make regular use of it?

I don’t know how much the associate the cause & effects and/or care about the consequences, but my observations of quite a few cats on catnip is generally:

* Each cat reacts differently to it.
* Most seem to like and enjoy it.
* They tend to have some and want more but eventually get enough and/or settle down.
* Some eat it. Some sit on it. Some rub themselves on it. Some just sniff it.
* They have different crazy & spaced out reactions per cat.
* Most of them mostly seem to have fun on it.
* Some of them sometimes get a bit freaked out at some point. Hallucinations and/or over-active imagination and/or apprehensions seems to be involved.
* Cats who have regular access to it do seem to make fairly regular use of it.
* Freshness matters, as does whether it’s been rustled to release more.
