How much can we expect to spend on movers?

Asked by notsoblond (2500points) October 12th, 2018

My husband and I will need to move again in February. Our new rental we are moving into this weekend is short term because it’s going to be demolished to make room for underground parking.

We’re getting too old to be moving all the furniture and boxes ourselves. This next move will be in the same city.

Do you have any suggestions or tips for finding movers? Estimated cost?

The mive within the same city? Is that the one you’re talking about? 3 bedroom house, with not a lot of “stuff” in boxes, so maybe 50 boxes that you packed, I’m guessing $700. That’s a total wild guess. It’s really impossible to guess without seeing all your stuff.

If the company is doing this long distance move for you, you can take the information from their estimate, the weight and once you know the box count, and call a few movers, including the one moving you now, and find out the price for a short move. They can tell you the base price for loading and unloading, assuming no stairs (stairs cost money) and then how much per mile, etc.

This is a good site:

There are a lot of variables involved, so us giving you an estimate is way too difficult. Examples of the variables: Are you looking for someone to pack your stuff and move you or are you going to pack it all yourself? How big is your place now? How much stuff do you have? How far are you moving? Are you renting a truck and only hiring muscle? What is the hourly rate for movers in your geographic area?
These are things only you can answer. @JLeslie has the best suggestion…call for estimates.

Three bedroom house with stuff already packed. In the same city. We just need help with heavy lifting. No appliances, only furniture and boxes.

They might tell you they need to come out and evaluate, but if you have the evaluation from the other company they can estimate it for you over the phone. Then, when the time actually comes to move, you can allow them to come and look if they insist. Usually, smaller houses and apartments they will do it over the phone with the warning if it takes more than 4 hours they start charging by the hour addition. Assume you will need at least an hour additional. I think minimum $500. They know they are bidding, so they might bid low and then you wind up needing more time.

Try going with a local company that only moves within the city. Two man movers and two men with a truck are two companies that work like that. Their prices may be less expensive than a nationwide company. My daughter just moved to a different apartment in the same complex. They charged for the use of the truck which was $150 plus by the hour for two men. The bill was in the neighborhood of $600 for a two bedroom apartment. If you’re moving across town then you will have to pay for mileage as well.

After this weekend I’d pay anything. My husband and I did it all ourselves with no help. It was too much for us.

Thanks for the tips!
