What are some uses of apple cider vinegar?

Asked by 2davidc8 (10189points) October 14th, 2018

So, I needed some apple cider vinegar for a recipe and found that the store had 32 oz. bottles of the stuff on sale for less than the 16 oz. bottle.
I bought the larger bottle figuring that there must be other good uses for it, and now I’m looking for suggestions. I understand that some people drink the stuff. If it’s good to drink, how do you prepare it? Do you drink it cold, with ice? How much do you dilute it? What else do you add to it?
Is it somehow regarded as a health food? jw

There is an apple cider vinegar fad right now. Supposedly, it cures a bunch of health problems, I’ve been told to take it for my cholesterol. Told by friends, not doctors. Some people claim you can lose weight taking the stuff. You can find recipes to make teas and other drinks with it, some people just take a spoonful of it like medicine. Like I said, I view it as a fad. I just found this link https://www.rd.com/health/wellness/apple-cider-vinegar-benefits/ that has a bunch of reasons to drink the stuff.

I love apple cider vinegar (ACV) in cooking. I have a brisket recipe with ACV, ketchup, and cinnamon and my family loves it. There are also dressings you can use it in. Salad dressings and I think bean salad dressings too. I love East Carolina bbq, which I believe is made with some ACV. I’ve never made it.

32 oz is a lot of ACV if you only use it in recipes here and there. It would last me more than a year. I think 16 oz would last me more than a year.

When I cook my BBQ Ribs in my Instant Pot, I cook them in apple juice & apple cider vinegar, When done, I brown them in the oven. They taste just like they were cooked for hours & had just come off the gill; when, in fact they cooked for less than 30 minutes while doing my housework & they’re guaranteed tender. I can’t drink acv straight. In order to drink acv you need to buy it “with Mother” & then add some locally grown Honey. After tasting the acv my mouth just isn’t interested in it when adding honey!!!

I just left some out on my kitchen counter in a bowl to attract those annoying little fruit flies. Caught 7 so far.

Vinaigrette dressing. 3 parts oil to part vinegar is the standard recipe. I use more than 1 part vinegar. Personal taste.

I add pepper and minced garlic. Sometime a little mustard, either prepared or dry.

As well as salads it’s a good marinade for chicken.

I read that a palatable way to take it is to put ice in a tall glass of apple juice and stir in a tablespoon or two (whichever you can stomach) and it’s supposed to have a lot of health benefits.

White vinegar is for cleaning, apple cider vinegar is for cooking.
Put some apple cider vinegar in water and bring to almost a boil and crack eggs into the liquid. The eggs will hold together while being cooked giving you poached eggs. Serve with salt, pepper and butter. For a more precise recipe, consult a cookbook.

I use it as color-safe bleach and disinfectant for my towel laundry. Towels come out clean and fluffy. OxyClean makes my towels rough.

@kritiper @RocketGuy How much do you use, for the purposes that you describe?

For laundry, I fill the bleach cup in the machine about half full. It’s not very big so maybe 2 oz of vinegar.

A facebook friend recently wrote that she used it to clean rust off of stainless steel. Sprayed it on, it might have been diluted, waited ten minutes, and then scrubbed with some baking soda I think. I don’t remember the full recipe.
