Do american football referees get upset when the player doesn't hand him the ball at the end of a play?

Also when they kick it into the field? I would hate playing fetch.

There are personnel on the sidelines that get a ball to the line judge. The ref’s don’t play fetch.

If a player throws the ball onto the field after the end of a down, they’ll get a delay of game penalty. If it is done flagrantly, they may get an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
