Career Advice: I am engineer trying to figure out whether to do a startup?

Asked by Jonathan_hodgkins (690points) October 19th, 2018

I am a Mechanical Design Engineer who has been pursuing work at a Product Development firm. I also have a slew of my own products that I have done market research on and have some promise. One idea, in particular would require me to design an electromechanical consumer product made partly out of plastic and I know there is seed money out there for it. I have always been excited about entrepreneurship, but I am afraid that if I go that direction I will never get into a PD firm. I am also struggling with what I really want in my career. I know this is highly subjective, but I am curious if the collective has thoughts or questions that I should consider in the fork in my career. Thank YOU in advance!

Why do you think you would “never get into a PD firm” if you try a startup first?
