I’m the type of person who will look at a book, no matter the genre, if I really like the cover design. What are some of your favorites?

Abarat by Clive Barker has a pretty amazing cover – Barker spent several years painting all of the illustrations for the book (including the cover), and they’re absolutely gorgeous!
@sdeutsch , Thanks! I really like that cover and I’m also thinking about reading it. It looks pretty interesting.

Do you have a picture, flameboi? I tried looking for it on amazon, but couldn’t find it.
@bri
D’you have an e-mail address where I can send you an e-card?
@flameboi
Wow, I really like that. I’m going to have to try out that makeup sometime ;)
@ bri – I am exactly the same way. Especially with kids books.
I like the cover on harry potter and the order of the pheonix
Envisioning Information by Edward Tufte. An excellent book with great images and content. I highly recommend you see him in person, he does conferences across the country.

@bri – Yeah, I’m that way mostly with Young Adult books, they have a lot of really cool covers.
I’m definitely one of those people who judges a book by it’s cover at first glance.
Thanks everyone!
I used to be a book cover designer for Little, Brown and Co. many years ago. I think the best covers are simple but evocative. Chip Kidd does great book covers and so does my friend Steve Snider. You can look up their names and see their work on Amazon.com.
The book covers designed by author Robert Rankin are quiet cool.
