Why are some directors still shooting in film when it's going to be digitally projected anyway?
First of all I hate digital projection and prefer film-movies over digital-movies. With digital projectors showing digital movies the screen looks dark to my eyes, there’s no film texture and so overly polished it feels thin and flattened like glossy magazine pictures.
The movie “BlacKkKlansman” was great and I enjoyed it except for it being too dark to see. But then I was surprised to find out it wasn’t shot digitally but in film. I can only blame the digital projector again.
So a movie shot in film but projected digitally looks the same.
Which brings me back to my question, why do they bother to shoot in film?
If it’s simply all about love for that physical medium and fighting against those in the industry who are almost done murdering film…that would be impressive and admirable….but is that the only reason?

The same reason camera makers are going back to film. There are things you can do with it you can’t do digitally.
If the projection is inferior today, the original can be re-scanned later when techniques are better.
Nostalgia.
Just like those hipsters going back to record players.
Do any digital cameras have as good resolution and color depth as film?
@Zaku I can only guess. The tech has really improved ( during filming and post-prod ) and the end-result is beautiful art. But I still prefer the “vibrant feel” of actual film projected by film projectors. I will die being nostalgic about that. I also would like them to stop referring to digital movies as “films.”
@Dutchess_III The first pic is too small for me to take a guess. The second pic looks to me it was taken with a digital cam.
It is small, isn’t it. :( It’s really an iconic picture that my daughter’s then boyfriend took of the boy twin 3 years ago. Every year at Christmas I put it up as my avatar and people just love it. I wish you could see it full size.
It was taken with a digital camera and that blew my mind.
And yes, the second was taken with a digital Canon 35 mm.
WAIT! I MEAN IT WAS TAKEN WITH A CELL PHONE, and that blew me away.
It wasn’t composed. It was just there. The BF was / is professional photographer, but he didn’t plan that picture. It is very cool though.
He uses a Canon 35 mm digital for his professional shots and he’s not above tweaking them in photoshop.
