Just saw James Whale’s “The Old Dark House” for the first time in Amazon Prime. It was a gothic hoot of a film. Love it!

I went to a friends house this past weekend and we watched some episodes of Frankie and Grace. I’m hooked. Only problem is, I don’t have Netflix. I’m looking into getting it now.
@chyna Ask around in your family, or friends; Netflix subscribers can give up to four accounts away to ‘members of their families’ (at least, in the Netherlands, and Greece, they can).
Might be a nice way to check it out.
Or there might be a ‘one month free’ trial going on.

I read they dropped some “great movie titles” some days ago.
Among them the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, “Fantastic Beasts”, and 14 more.
On Netflix, that is.
August Rush was a very nice surprise for me.
I’m loving the second season of “The Marvelous Mrs Maisel” on Prime. The first season was good but the second is even better.
On Netflix, I loved “Anne with an E” and “The Guernsey Potato Peel Pie and Literary Society.” I’m watching “The Kaminsky Method” there now which is fun.
I also enjoyed “The Man Who Invented Christmas” a hokey movie about Charles Dickens with Dan Stevens.
Enjoyed The Man Who Invented Christmas as well.
August Rush, yes. Familiar with the film and even bought two soundtracks from it.
I’m going find it again, if it’s available. And The Man Who Invented Christmas because I TRUST you @mazingerz88!
^^Well, I don’t have to worry if you like Dickens. Lol
I find it fun watching real and partly fictionalized ( probably ) life stories of great writers.
@mazingerz88 Me too. Did you see “Invisible Woman” about Dickens and Ellen Terry with Ralph Fiennes as Dickens?
^^Oooooo…looking for that right now! Tenk yu!
I’d like to recommend that Beethoven film with Ed Harris playing him and that actress Kruger(?) as his assistant. I think it’s a gem.
“Immortal Beloved”? I think I saw it.
I don’t know that it’s hidden, but I saw Downfall this weekend. It tells the story of the last days in Hitler’s bunker, largely from the point of view of his secretary, Traudl Junge. She survived the war and wrote a memoir. Harrowing story. It kind of boils down the whole Nazi enterprise down to insanity of fanatics devoted to the cause to the end. The actual Junge is interviewed at the beginning and end. Glad I saw it.
Here are 3 really good mystery series that I have watched on Amazon this year:
Safe
Deep Water
Dr. Foster
I agree with the Jelly who mentioned Grace and Frankie. It’s one of the best, and funniest, shows I’ve ever seen.
I thought The Little Drummer Girl short series on AMC was fantastic. You might be able to get it on demand with your cable package. It was way better than the 1970s Diane Keaton movie which I also saw recently.
The Night Manager is free on Amazon Prime in the US. Another John le Carre spy story (like Little Drummer Girl). Six parts. Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, and Olivia Colman all received Golden Globe nominations. And, interesting, a fourth actor , Tom Hollander, won a BAFTA.
I was just reminded of I, Tonya because Margot Robbie is in an upcoming movie. Margot Robbie was nominated for Best Actress Oscar and Allison Janney won Best Supporting Actress (so another one that’s not so hidden.)
It was pretty good @mazingerz88! Had me jumping for resources. I guess in a way Dickens really DID change the way we celebrated Christmas. That was interesting.
^^ Nice! Glad you liked it.
@notsoblond Mindhunter. Oh yeah. That was good.
So do we blame all Black Friday deaths on Dickens? :D
Mindhunter, up next. If it’s still there.
^^Mindhunter’s great and a bit dark. Hope you like dark.
I couldn’t really get into it….
^^Happens. That opening scene either hooks or not.
Warmed up to it by the second episode knowing where they would go with it. How the FBI came up with profiling theories and practices.
That’s an angle I’ve never seen from other shows before. The fine direction and good performances of the two main lead sealed the deal for me.
Next time I have the TV all too myself I’ll see if I can’t get through a couple of episodes.
However, that opening scene, where he shoots himself, was horrifying to me. :( I’m a weeny. I know it.
I’m a weeny too. But there is that side in some which after being horrified switches to wanting to know why did he do that? Could it have been prevented? In short, seeing mysteries and puzzles in pools of blood.
