Would James Fields Jr. not have gotten life sentences if he showed genuine remorse for Heather Heyer’s death?

Asked by mazingerz88 (29220points) December 11th, 2018 from iPhone

Fields is the neo-Nazi who killed Heyer, an activist with his car at a white supremacist rally. He got a life-sentence for the killing and lots of additional more years for other charges.

Prosecutors showed he was dismissive of his victim’s death.

@mazingerz88 what makes you think he was remorseful?

^^^ @mazingerz88 is saying that Fields did NOT show any remorse. The question is whether some remorse or regret would have resulted in a less severe sentence.

Fields’ crime was malicious, and his demeanor has been belligerent, arrogant, and, at times, gleeful. I do believe that the harsh sentence includes punishment for Fields’ disdain for his victim and lack of respect for her family.

@Love_my_doggie that’s just my point. For Fields to show remorse, he has to feel remorse. And it’s pretty clear that he could care less.

Let him die in prison.

That kind of thing can affect sentencing, so maybe. But he didn’t. He’s a piece of human garbage. May he rot in prison.

@elbanditoroso A sane, balanced, and decent person can’t show remorse without feeling remorse. But, psychopaths can do so very easily. Such people spend their waking hours deceiving and manipulating, without any appropriate emotions.

There’s also the matter of a convicted criminal genuinely feeling true remorse…for himself. He might have true regrets about having been caught, or about being condemned to a prison sentence.

Throughout his arrest, trial, and conviction, Fields has been nothing but proud of his crime.

(Virginia resident here, by the way, who went to school in Charlottesville.)

He is probably a hero to many people who believe like him, why would he feel remorse.

^^He is still a human being? I think his young age also plays a part on why he’s apathetic. I may have just offended young people.

@mazingerz88 He isn’t apathetic, he is involved, but interested in a despicable politic.

It is possible, but people may have thought that he was faking it.

At 21, he may eventually feel some degree of remorse. Even if he eventually does, his sentence should not be reduced.
