What are your thoughts on each individual in this story?

If it matters, all the people in this story are gay.

During the end of a long relationship (6+years) Colt had an open relationship with his partner, Nicholas. It was a last-ditch effort to save their relationship. Colt was hooking up with a guy named Braxton.
Nicholas and Colt broke up because their relationship was dead, and Colt introduced Nicholas to Braxton and wanted them to be friends. This did not go well and put the final nail in the coffin. That is the last of Nicholas, in this story.
Colt and Braxton then started dating. This went on for 6 months. During that time, Braxton was introduced to Jake and Max – a couple that had been dating and monogamous for 4 years. Max had decided to propose to Jake once he found work again.
Colt felt at this time that Braxton was not what he was looking for, so he broke off the relationship.
This is the moment Braxton started caring about Colt and took the breakup incredibly hard. He thought about doing many rash things—including committing suicide and joining the military. He took comfort in spending many hours on the phone with Max, who talked him out of doing all those things. Texts were sent, calls were made, and sometimes the conversations were had over discord while playing a video game. This went on for months. Max invited Braxton to hang out with himself and Jake whenever the opportunity arose. They had a weekly game night, and Braxton started coming to that. Colt eventually cut all contact with Braxton for a few months. Which sent him further into depression.
Eventually, Colt met another guy named Tony. They met, because Tony had just moved to town and was a previous friend of Max’s from his traveling days. They hit it off and things were going well for a few months.
Max got sick – and actually ended up getting a colonoscopy. At the time, they thought the colitis (Swollen colon) could possibly be related to some sort of cancer and needed to do a deeper dive, and have a bunch of imaging done. During this time, Max and Braxton spoke less and less. Jake started to work out with Braxton. Every week day for a few months. One day, they went to a festival in town here and Max got sick and went home he paid for everyone’s drinks and told them to have a good time.
Jake and Braxton got drunk and went home. Braxton’s roommate Lance, came up with the idea for them all to try on sexy underwear. They did, and Lance passed out. Jake and Braxton fooled around.
Max got sick a few more times, and over the course of a month, Jake and Braxton messed around 3 more times.
Braxton was permitted to talk to Colt and wanted to hang out with Colt when Tony wasn’t around.
Tony stated he was not comfortable with that, and they broke it off.
The next week Colt and Braxton were dating.
Max started feeling better, it ended up being mostly the stress of being out of a job for 6 or 7 months that caused the feelings he was feeling in his gut. He was given a clean bill of health.
Max decided to propose to Jake, and Jake said yes. 2 days later, he came out with the fact he was cheating on him the past month. At this point, Max and Jake had been dating 5 and a half years.
Max immediately forgives Jake. His reasoning, is that Jake has never been with any other guy, and he feels as though Jake was tricked into this.
Jake wants Max and Braxton to be friends. They try this, and it ends with Max completely ignoring Braxton one night when they all went out. Jake sees this and gets upset. So upset, he punches a TV and breaks it.
Max sees how upset this makes Braxton, and apologies and offers to bring Colt and Braxton coffee about what happened the night before. This is verbdom the text Braxton responds with:
“You don’t need to explain yourself. Honestly your behavior has been unacceptable. If you need to talk something out, then talk it out. Wallowing doesn’t solve anything and only makes things worse. It’s not fair to you and it’s definitely not fair to Jake. Being a grump is on you. You chose that. We all went out together to have fun. You should try to live for the moment once in a while because there were so many good and fun things about last night and I really wish you could have seen it and let yourself have fun. Letting yourself see the good and being happy can offer so much insight when you are in a low place. It’s easier to look at the bad and focus on a source of confrontation. Being happy is harder to define. But knowing what makes you happy helps you through all the bad.”

What are your thoughts on each individual?
Braxton
Max
Tony
Colt
Jake
Nicholas
Lance

I don’t care enough about any of them to have an impression.

Each of them has a backstory, which you’re not telling and we don’t know. All we have is a snapshot of a situation at a particular point in time.

If this is talking about real people, the backstory is even more important because humans and human emotions are at stake. If this is a fictional account, then I truly don’t care to waste any time trying to figure out the emotional entanglements between these people.

The nicest thing I can say is that they represent various protagonists in a very strange play. But I’m not engaged in the story – I just don’t care.

The tale reads like the worst sort of parody of the worst sort of chick flick or soap opera. The only reason it matters that all of the characters are gay is that it conforms to every negative stereotype universally promulgated by gay bashing homophobes. There isn’t enough character development to form an opinion on anyone. And I can pat myself on the back as I congratulate myself on not being an emotionally unstable fickle sissy.

It’s too complicated and unnuanced. Seems like a small group of people interacting. If I were Max and Jake, I’d probably look for some new friends.

But nice to see you @Mowens!

Skimming it again, it seems to me that Braxton is a troublemaker.

Except for Max and Nicholas, they are all immature narcissists.

Nicholas is a moron for putting up with a narcissist like Colt for 6+ years. There are clearly some self esteem issues here. He escaped the shit show just in time.

Max apparently does not mind being a doormat, as long as everybody else is happy. There is always somebody like that in any group. Perhaps his mother and father broke up when he was young, and he thinks it is his fault. Children are self centered, and are capable of imagining that divorce is because of them. He will never find personal happiness. Too bad.

All are gay. If it matters

I’m unfortunately Max in this story, and it is not fiction, it is my life. Braxton is a troublemaker. And I’m in love with Jake, who for all of his faults is an incredibly decent human being that can’t see the evil in Braxton.

@josie I am Max and this story is my life for the last year. I meant no disrespect with the if it matters comment, I am gay and 100% comfortable with it. For the record, my parents have been married for 45 years as of last year, and still going strong. I still believe Jake is a great guy. I was his first boyfriend, his first sexual encounter, his first everything. He grew up in a small town of literally 30 people. He doesn’t understand manipulative fucks like i do. Enter Braxton. A manipulative fuck. He manipulates Jake into thinking everything was his fault, when it was his plan from the beginning. When Braxton doesnt get his way, he talks and talks and wines and wines until he gets what he wants. And don’t get me wrong – I don’t think Jake is innocent. But I have been cheated on before, and I walked out the door that second. I still believe Jake is one of the good ones.

@janbb Thank you. I agree – now to get Jake to see that….

janbb's avatar

@mowens I knew you were Max somehow. He is the one I had most sympathy for. And I would fight for Jake.

mowens's avatar

@janbb The problem is, he doesn’t see that he is being manipulated by Braxton. :( I may need to back off completely to give him the chance to see that.

janbb's avatar

Yeah, you may need to back away. Two ways to go as I see it, either you give him an ultimatum – if he wants to marry you, he moves away from Braxton or you walk. Or the either is to cancel the plans to marry for now to give him space to explore and you wait patiently but move on with your life. The second bears less of a risk of losing him completely. Both are painful. I would definitely not kow-tow to Braxton any more yourself.

mowens's avatar

Oh, I don’t intend to. The text Braxton sent me almost got a “Well go fuck yourself” from me. I only did it to make Jake happy.

mowens's avatar

@elbanditoroso Unfortunately, this isn’t fiction. It is my life. I am Max. I tried to write the story as dispassionately as possible to try and see all points of view.

Nicholas – He is an average guy who doesn’t like polygamy.
Colt – He probably cannot be in a monogamy relationship, and is sensitive.
Tony – He is probably someone who doesn’t like to fool around.
Max – He is caring and mature but, naive.
Jake – He is impulsive.
Braxton – He is indifferent to humans feelings.
Lance – He loves sex, probably it than anything else; what I think that may blind him from other things in life. (different than Braxton that consciously fool around.)
