Why does cleaning the inside of the ear with a finger trigger coughing sometimes?

Is there a nerve or muscle connecting the back of the throat to the inner ear?
Putting a finger in the ear and rotating could cause a sudden intense itching sensation in the throat resulting into coughs.

Must be a problem unique to Mazingerians. Never happens to me.
Mazingerians. LOL!
Sometimes I do something that triggers a sneeze, but I don’t remember what it is right now.
But if picking your ear with your finger causes you to cough, it means you are dying. It does.
Can’t say that I’ve had that happen, but putting my finger in my belly button (to clean it in the shower, say) gives me a strong feeling of nausea and I’ve been told that’s not normal either. Maybe we just have abnormal crossed nerves :P
Putting your finger in your ear could be upsetting the pressure in your ear/sinuses, causing a post nasal reaction that generates a cough.
You’re terminally ill. It won’t be long now. This makes me very sad, because I’ll miss you.
Ear-nose-throat are interconnected and form a single medical specialty. You might be tickling some nerve that links with your throat and causes an odd sensation.
I’m dying? And I thought it was something really serious. Pssh.
I’ve never had that experience.
I remembered cuz I did it this morning…tweezing me eyebrows makes me sneeze.
