Why do people keep saying Trump is not a politician?

Asked by JLeslie (65746points) December 25th, 2018 from iPhone

He is now, isn’t he?

He seems to be working the system and the people pretty well.

Obama only had a couple of years in politics when he became president. Now, Trump has his couple of years under his belt.

Trump has played in the sandbox with politics for years. He has talked about donating money wherever it will help him to whichever candidate. I really doubt he was naive to the ways of Washington.

I’m not saying he was well informed on issues, I’m only saying he seems to be a politician to me.

Obama’s “couple of years” actually numbered 12 before he took the presidential oath.

And a career in fraud and manipulation does not equal a career in politics, or only in the broadest sense. As cynical as one wants to be, (not unreasonably) a “politician” is someone who has had at least some experience in being elected to public service, no matter how poorly they execute the job.

Unless your Q was asked tongue-in-cheek, in which case I didn’t get it.

The Orangutan is not a politician, because politicians tend to go for the lowest common denominator.
The Orangutan goes for the lowest denominator.

For the same reason I am not a doctor. No experience, no education in it. But hey. I’ve doctored a boat load of children in my life. That’s good enough, isn’t it?

A politician knows how to get you to agree to give him what he wants, and make you think it was your idea. Trump can’t negotiate his way out of a paper bag.

Barack and Michelle were involved in politics all of their adult lives. They learned about it.
Trump is so stupid and so arrogant he cant learn. All he knows is bending people to.his will.
He was too uninformed to realize that, as president, he would have less control, and less privacy, than ever before in his life. It came as an utter, unwelcome surprise to him.

He has no history in politics and no experience in it. Even the worst politicians know a lot more about what they’re doing than this one does. Getting elected to something does not make you a politician. He isn’t even going to make a good autocratic dictator.

Because he obviously isn’t. He’s a TV host, a real estate
and casino guy.

As to why people voted for him to be President is one of the greatest mysteries and tragedies in US history.

The label also excuses him for his own flaws and inadequacies in running the whole country.

^^Funny enough, a lot of people who voted for Trump cited they liked that he’s not a politician, but many of those same people accused Obama of not having enough political experience. Which can bring us to the hypocrisy Q that’s going on right now.

They just want to keep making excuses for his fuck ups.
The dire hard right wingers stayed with Nixon making excuse after excuse for him, no evidence and so on till the tapes came to light then they turned on him, and suddenly no one voted for him.
Same with the Don Father, when the axe falls hopefully he will take most of the republican party with him.

Trump was elected because he was not and still isn’t part of the career politician game. THAT’S why they say he isn’t a politician. It isn’t that being POTUS isn’t a political office…it is. But he isn’t part of the political machine that has corrupted this country for decades.

Dutchess_lll's avatar

I was not aware of any particular problems with Nixon until Watergate @SQUEEKY2. Would you elaborate?

In other words Trump didn’t need any help becoming corrupt @seawulf575. He was.at the top of that game by elementary school.

^^Brilliant attempt at solutions to problems by his voters. Elect a foul-mouthed racist clown to power.

Dutchess_lll's avatar

His voters would damand surgery by a butcher because he hasn’t been corrupted by big pharma.

Trump happens to be in a position that is normally filled by a politician but that doesn’t make him a politician. He is still a conman.

I wouldn’t say he is working the system pretty well. He stands apart from the system and is doing his best to destroy it and replace it with mere anarchy.

It’s easy. Every person is politician to a certain degree. Trump is a person. Primarily, though, he is a businessman who should keep his day job.

Dutchess_III's avatar

His day job consists of ripping people off. He’s primarily a con man who should be in prison.
