How long can Trump continue to legally hold government jobs hostage?

Asked by chyna (51598points) December 25th, 2018

He says he will continue the government shut down until he gets his money for the border wall. Is this legal? Can this really continue until he gets his way?

I’m wondering the same thing. Where are the checks and balances on Presidential power?

The brain and the heart are discussing who is in charge. The brain said that If he goes then the body dies. The heart said the same. Then the rectum said that he has all the power. The brain and the heart laughed at him and said you can’t kill the body. The rectum said no, but If I close myself then the body will get full of shit and I can keep it up until you both surrender to me. Moral of the story is that the asshole has the greatest power in an organization.

He will trash the country and blame the Dem’s (while he holds his breath and passes out in his tantrum).

I hope not too long, I just looked up a national park I want to go to, and it said it might be closed because of the shut down. I’m not happy about this possible great inconvenience to me ~.

Under Clinton there was one that lasted almost 4 weeks, and under Obama it was 2 weeks I think. So, I’m not trying to compare, I’m only saying the shutdowns sometimes last a while.

I just read that Pelosi said that once the Democrats are in control of the house they will get the government back open. I guess that means congress has some power to do it? They will still be at odds with what the president wants, so I’m not sure how that works.

So the answer is a week?

By claiming, and believing, it is all the Dems fault.

@jannb we are supposed to have a system of checks and balances and a presidential veto can be overridden by a ⅔ vote of both the House and the Senate. At this time, that ain’t gonna happen.

Once the Dems control the House it is still going to be the Republicans who control things. The house will vote to override but the Senate will still be under their control and it is questionable as to whether they will be able to find nine Republicans willing to kick Trump and his minion McConnell in the nuts and override. It is all going to depend upon pressure from constituents and with them it could go either way.

The Pope’s Christmas message:

My wish for a happy Christmas is a wish for fraternity. Fraternity among individuals of every nation and culture. Fraternity among people with different ideas, yet capable of respecting and listening to one another. Fraternity among persons of different religions.

The Queen’s Christmas Message:

The Commonwealth includes 53 countries with 2.4 billion people, a third of the world’s population. Its strength lies in the bonds of affection it promotes, and a common desire to live in a better, more peaceful world. Even with the most deeply held differences, treating the other person with respect and as a fellow human being is always a good first step towards greater understanding

Trump’s Christmas Message:

I’m shutting down the government of the United States until I get my own way.

Actually @flutherother his message, according to him is: “The Democrats are shutting down the government of the United States until I get my way.”
