Did You See Driverless Vehicles on Mountainous Roads in Northern California in the 1950s?

Asked by Qav (688points) December 27th, 2018

We saw them. Several times, my parents saw them, and I saw a couple. Now, remembering, I want to deny them, saying we were mistaken, but that will not take them from the past.

Did anyone here see them in that era? Know about them? Hear of them?

I wouldn’t think the technology would be there in the 1950’s for autonomous vehicles in that time frame.
Maybe remote controlled but that’s about it.

No Internet then, of course, so I don’t know anything, really. My father once said they were military experiments. I don’t know if he had learned that or if he was just speculating about them. My parents would see them on the winding mountainous roads, mainly; I only saw the ones I did on highways. I accepted them then, but today, it’s just hard to believe. Mother would scream when she saw them, and a couple times, she said they were “of the devil.” :D :D

It could be that your recollection is correct: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_self-driving_cars#1950s

“It was developed in collaboration with General Motors, who paired two standard models with equipment consisting of special radio receivers and audible and visual warning devices that were able to simulate automatic steering, accelerating and brake control.”

They were experimenting with in the pavement wires that controlled vehicles on a closed track in the 1950’s.

Thank you, everyone!

I don’t know, however, about where Father and Mother saw their driverless vehicles they saw; I could never see them. But the only ones I saw were on regular highways. I don’t know if there were wires anywhere. I was busy looking at the empty space behind the steering wheels. Also, they were on the opposite side of the highway and quickly gone.
