Watching the Rose Parade, and even with the best playing bands, I tend to dislike the actual sound of marching bands. I feel the same way about fireworks – technically impressive, but little depth. What about you?

Depends on the band and what they’re playing. I fairly often like good marching bands, especially Scottish and Irish ones with bagpipes. The Swiss Top Secret precision drum unit (not joking) is unbelievably good!
Some not-so-great bands doing marching-band versions of American pop songs, noooo…
Love watching my Spartans march! When my husband and I go to visit my school, the day before we go to watch the band practice sometimes. Always before the game we go to listen to the band outside of the stadium pre-game.
@rockfan It maybe the mics they are using. Vocal mics for announcers are not good for bands or orchestras !
I saw the Marine Corps Marching Band at the Sunset Patade performance at the Iwo Jima Memorial one time, the sound was vibrant, full, and impressive.
But when in a parade on a street, that quality of sound is only for a minute or two, then fades as it passes. And the sound quality at a football game halftime in a stadium is awful, a waste of everyone’s time.. the only ones that like it are the parents of the band members.
I have it often in my town, often done by local schools. I won’t call it noisy as they’ll eventually pass anyway, and it’s always interesting to watch that kind of parade.
What’s more interesting is the morning outdoor exercise of our local Navy officers (which is somewhat equivalent to marching band). Ahh… those tan, muscular, topless, sweat-dripping men jogging around while vigorously chanting Navy anthem under the gentle morning sunlight.
For me this question is like asking if I like movies.
A very good band could be playing a poorly chosen piece, and I would not like that.
I do frequently enjoy marching bands.
When watching a major parade, like Macy’s, I get a mental image of how excited all the various band members would have been when they learn they were invited.
I do. I’ve always loved the sound of big brass bands and the rat a tat tat from the drums. I also love big marching bands of bagpipers and drummers.
As much as I hate Ohio State with the white hot heat that exceeds the nuclear cores of a thousand suns I love their marching band.
I’m with you on this. I’ve never really liked them. It’s more of an annoyance to me. I don’t like firework sounds either although I wouldn’t compare a marching band to fireworks.
