After reading the attached article, do you agree or disagree with her actions, or are you neutral?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47050points) January 4th, 2019

New Congresswoman cusses in Congress.

Although I’m tickled to have some young blood in Congress, and I agree with her sentiment, IMO it wasn’t language befitting the gravity of the position. It also distresses me to know that she used the word in a discussion with her son who, I assume, is still fairly young.
Just because I will probably like her, and probably approve of her overall, I’m not going to skip over bad behavior, like so many trump supporters do for him.

What are your thoughts.

I’m glad we’re all focused on policy here.

Are you joking? It’s “distressing” to you to know that other people use different vocabulary around their kids?

Personally, I think Trump should grab her by the pussy. Isn’t that the term he used?

notnotnotnot's avatar

Also, @Dutchess_III: “IMO it wasn’t language befitting the gravity of the position.”….

The position? The fact that congress members aren’t swearing like sailors all the time is fucking disturbing.

#ITMFA has been a movement for almost two years now. Glad to see it is now mainstream.

The language befits the crisis.

Las Vegas in 2011,Trump said about talking to China “Listen you motherfuckers, we’re going to tax you 25 percent!”

Stupid is as stupid does.

So what do we do when the word is so over used, and used so casually, it ceases to have any value at all? Do we just advance in vulgarity?

I would expect that from a loud mouthed vulgar asshole like trump @rojo. But I’d prefer my party goes high. Or gets high. Or. Wait. What was I saying?

rojo's avatar

Oh, but, to answer your question, I disagree with both her stance and her language.

Dutchess_III's avatar

What about her stance do you disagree with @rojo?

mazingerz88's avatar

No she shouldn’t use that word in that setting imo, even if what she said was true. : )

KNOWITALL's avatar

I disagree with her language in front of a child and I think it’s unprofessional in that setting. I really believe Dems should take the high road to provide appropriate contrast before 2020. They may win a few votes from the religious right if they can keep it together.

rojo's avatar

I don’t think they should go after Trump at this time. Not because he isn’t deserving but because you cannot get the Senate to follow through and because it would not help the Democrats win back the presidency.

Dutchess_III's avatar

At this point it’s not even so much about the dems getting the presidency. Its like “Anybody But Trump!” for president.
I’m just hoping that this republican insanity that started when Obama was elected (I think) has finally come to a head and it will pop like the pimple it’s become. Maybe they can get back to some degree of normalcy and we can start over. I have voted Republican in the past, and I suppose I might do so in the future if they can get their shit together.

She said it. She shouldn’t apologize. Don’t retreat. I think she should use more decorum but that’s for her to decide.

Regarding impeachment, it’s a stupid waste of time and a distraction when the Senate won’t convict. 20 Republicans have to agree. I think we’ll arrive at that point soon enough. In the meantime, House Democrats have control of the committees. They have oversight of the agencies. They can issue subpoenas for documents and appearances.

Just for two items, they can influence what the FCC is doing to net neutrality, and what the EPA is doing to the environment.

josie's avatar

Personally, I don’t care.

Makes you wonder if somebody else out there is telling their kid to “Ignore that bitch”

Neither one is very helpful.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Yeah, @josie. Or telling their 7 year old, “Fuck that bitch.”

I think it speaks more to her lack of couth and demeanor. It really doesn’t surprise me she would say this to her young child….she just said it to the world. It is who she is. She is just another example of what today’s progressive politicians are. They will say the most outrageous things just to get air time so people see them. Come election time, most people won’t understand what they have done or if they have done a good job for them…just if they have heard of them.
An alternative question…if Trump or a Republican had said something similar to this, would the MSM handle it the same way? Would your answers be the same?

KNOWITALL's avatar

@seawulf Pelosi already said Trump has said worse, although she wouldnt use or condone that language.

She got excited, I get it, but it was obviously not a new standard per Pelosi.

seawulf575's avatar

@KNOWITALL Yes, Pelosi is using Trump to make an excuse for the new representative. But let’s be honest…when Trump says things that Pelosi has said before she says they are outrageous.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@seawulf I keep trying to imagine our local chambers and how people would react. I’m certain I wouldnt be re-elected haha. Bottom line, public service requires some self-control and a filter, so hopefully this was a one-off.

I’m not a fan of Pelosi but I understand her, and you must admit Trump and his grabbing opened the door to this because it was outrageous so now theres that excuse.

seawulf575's avatar

@KNOWITALL and I have stated that one of the things I don’t like about Trump is his childish behavior. And yes, his grabbing statement opened the door. But let’s review the differences: he said that long before he was running for office. It was said in a private setting with one or two people his own age. It was tacky and crude, but not meant to be broadcast to the whole world. Tlaib said it AFTER being elected. She said it in a speech to the world. She says she actually said it to her young son.
Now…let’s review the reaction to the two comments. Which one got more publicity? Which one has been slammed by the Dems more? The real question is which one SHOULD be frowned upon more?

Darth_Algar's avatar

I don’t give a flying fuck what language a person uses. What concerns me is how they use it.

So do I care that she used the word “motherfucker”? No, I don’t. Do I care that she may have used it in front of her son? No. What would concern me was if she were calling her son a “motherfucker”. Just as I don’t care that Donald Trump used the word “pussy”. I do care that he was basically boasting about sexual assault.

So in closing – shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, tits.

Dutchess_III's avatar

@Unofficial_Member No one said she wasn’t within her rights to say it. Many of us are saying it was a poor showing on her part.
