If so, what does that entail?
What does the day mean to you personally?
*King was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King’s honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later.

It’s a regular workday for me – I’ll be at my desk.
Many of our customers are city or county-owned facilities, and in Atlanta, almost all of them close for MLK day.
Regular workday for me as well (in MA).
We are having a guest speaker at my congregation on Sunday and a service day in the afternoon in commemoration.
Hmmmm, I guess I thought it was mandatory. Interesting.
@janbb I’m going to check into that locally, all I have heard of is the parade.
It’s a holiday for banks, the post office, and the federal government. Most of the latter is already furloughed and not working at all.
Federal holiday just means that federal offices are closed. State and local government offices, however, are not obligated to close (unless, of course, that holiday is a state and/or local holiday as well).
So most people are working, interesting. I better look around for more ideas.
I don’t do anything on the day usually. I really want to see The Green Book, maybe Monday is extra motivation to finally get myself to the theatre. I hope the movie is stilll playing near me.
For me it’s a reminder of our youngest son. He was born on the holiday. We’ll be enjoying the extra long weekend since there’s no school Monday. Poor dad (Jon) will be working.
Today is MLK’s actual birthday – same day as mine.
If I’m not mistaken, there’s a jelly (Bill1939?) who attended the March on Washington in 1963.
