Can you name a single individual more responsible for late night television ratings than Donald Trump?
For 2 years now, Colbert has devoted the opening monologue of every program to savaging the President, and the intensity of the ridicule has propelled Colbert to first place in the ratings with the other hosts in hot and vicious pursuit. Has there ever been a more productive comedy goldmine than the current President?

Jon Stewart had a stable of people he ridiculed as well, long before Trumpy came on to the scene.
And if you go back far enough, Ted Koppel did Nightline every night for years and years, starting with the Iran hostage crisis. In fact, one could argue that Koppel / Nightline (which was serious) got people in the habit of watching serious TV late at night, and over time gave an opening to people like Colbert and Stewart.
That’s contrasted to Johnny Carson, Letterman, Leno, and the ‘entertainment – variety’ types of shows, which made no effort to be serious or topical.
@ucme his popularity goes in and out.
Nothing close comes to mind to this trump fixation except GWB.
Might be wrong but I give serious credit to Stewart and Colbert for incessantly harping on these disgusting political nightmares that was bush and now trump which somehow I think makes a real difference in encouraging opposition through comical exposue of its true evil nature.
