Who or what do you think caused Trump to give in on his wall issue?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47069points) January 26th, 2019

He could care less about the people, so it had to have been something that affected him personally. What could it have been? What could someone have possibly said to him to cause him to give in?

Mass strikes were being planned.

Dutchess_III's avatar

But how would that hurt him, personally?

I bet his billionaire “friends,” CEOs and stuff, THEY were feeling the pinch so they leaned on trump and threatened him with monetary loss or with pulling support for him.

Trump hasn’t really paid much attention to the wealthy, so that’s not likely it.

I surmise that he knew the shutdown needed to end because people were suffering, If you don’t accept that he has compassion, then maybe you’d accept that the suffering people would mean lost votes in 2020. Pelosi, however, couldn’t care less about the people (gov’t workers or the people at the border who need the wall), so she would never change her blocking Trump’s plan

So we have three weeks to work it out, or we go back to the shutdown.

Well, that’s the idea. But I think Trump will get the wall built another way.

Remember, everyone—Obama, Schumer, Biden, Hillary—have all promoted a wall or barrier, some as recently as last year.. The wall is wanted except they don’t want Trump to do it. They want it to be a failure so they will not give in.

It is my personal belief that the wall will be built another way. But if people suffer or get no pay, it will hurt the people, the economy, and votes. Pelosi has proven that she will block or obstruct anything she can that Trump does. Her hatred of Trump is greater than the needs of the border patrol, national security, or the suffering of gov’t workers.

I seriously doubt he runs again! He’s crying to get out now.

Yellowdog's avatar

I certainly wouldn’t run again. I’d just let the Bernie types have it. To hell with the country.

No borders. 70 percent taxes.Ice and border security abolished. Socialism. Let them have it all. They deserve it.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Taxes would be higher, but it wouldn’t be 70%.

Trump keeps a close eye on his popularity ratings which have been in steep decline since the shutdown. I’m sure this had him worried and had an effect on his decision. As for compassion if Trump had any he wouldn’t have started the shutdown in the first place and he wouldn’t be threatening to re impose it in three weeks’ time if he doesn’t get his own way.

Fear. Fear of being responsible for deaths if one of those planes crashes due to his shutdown or a sick family member of a governent worker who needs continuous life-sustaining treatment dies.

Despite trump not having a soul, he wouldn’t want to spend the rest of his miserable life being blamed for such deaths.

@Yellowdog: Obama, Schumer, Biden, Hillary have all promoted a wall or barrier? Do you have links? I’ve never heard of them promoting walls or barriers.

Call from Putin saying to spin them around again on February 16th, on his unsecured private phone line.

There are already walls, in strategic places. Most of the border is an uninhabitable wasteland, and therefore doesn’t need a wall….

Being told by Nancy Pelosi that his state of the union address might be cancelled.

Dutchess_III's avatar

It WAS cancelled.

@Dutchess_III Wow thanks for the info. I liked watching them with family.

I’m betting NYC friends annoyed flights were going to be cancelled. Just a guess.

The SOTU wasn’t cancelled, it was postponed. And now he gets it, but it was killing him that he wasn’t going to get TV Time.

And closing airports in NY was about to put pressure from all over the country unlike any President has seen since LBJ and the war. That and the fact that not getting air travel back to normal by the 30th would impact travel to the Super Bowl. No private jets into Atlanta would be met with telegrams and phone calls to the RNC and the Red State Senators.

Donald had a terrible, no-good, very bad Friday.

He hasn’t caved yet. Stay tuned for Round 2.

He had no choice. The damage from the shutdown was reaching a critical point, which makes his threat to shut down the government again rather hollow. He may go the national emergency route, but that option has been available all along and its use would be a sign of desperation.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I bet @zenvelo nailed it.

If he shuts it down again I wouldn’t be surprised if he completely loses what small support he still has @kritiper.
