Why does my new personal computer take so long to power up and load the desktop, when compared to my Chromebook?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24986points) February 4th, 2019

I just spent $1,500 for a Dell 8 gig 2 terabyte p.c. desktop with intel 8th gen with windows 10 and it is slow. I installed another 8 gigs of ram and it didn’t help. Its passed my 30 day window to return. My Chromebook logs on to the internet faster, than my p.c. Would it help if I got a faster internet speed? I don’t know my current internet speed, but is unlimited use. What can I do to speed it up? Like messing with the settings and other stuff?

Here is a cut and paste of my computer stats if it helps.

It probably loads a lot of bloatware at startup.

@ragingloli Thanks. I will check my computer for stuff to remove. Will update .

Are you starting it up from power off everyday? Most modern desktops are designed to be on 24/7. At my work, we never power down the hundreds of desktops. Powering up takes a long time even though we don’t have bloatware on our computers.

@zenvelo I usually put on sleep for a couple of days. I am going through the updates before I get to deciding what programs are bloatware.

When was the last time you defraged your disc? How many unwanted/unneeded files and programs are clogging your system?

You have a conventional (old) hard drive. I’d add a ss hard drive and use that for your OS. That’s your bottleneck. Put your files and data on the convwnrional drive. Bloatware does not help either.

Chromebooks are super, super fast to start. They are what we used to call a thin client – just a viewer to see the servers where all the work is being done.

It’s essentially a computer running a single program, the Chrome browser.

Your PC can get faster (as mentioned above, remove bloatware (Mcaffee first!) and an SSD would help), but it will never boot like a Chromebook.

Windows 10 also checks for and installs updates every day (not optional), and is set to sent MS tracking info in countless numbers of ways.

only has one hard drive .. I purchased two. The dell support talked me through installing second 8 gig ram. Now new computer doesn’t work and is in pieces all over my living room. They said that the warranty doesn’t cover it. They will email my within 2 days to see what happens.

It’s not ss, that’ll make a huge difference. I bet you installed the ram in the wrong slots. Start with 1 stick and see if you can get the computer to post

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@ARE_you_kidding_me I was told not to touch it until they get back with me in a day or two.

@all Repairman just left. All is well. 16 gigs of ram installed and a new motherboard.

@all Update Still using the same desktop computer. Other then crashing from time to time, I am happy with it.
