How long is flaxseed meal good in the refrigerator?

Asked by Aster (20028points) February 4th, 2019

I almost passed out when I saw the size of the can when it arrived. It will take me years to eat it all. Into the fridge it went but how long will it last in there? It takes up room.

I only keep a supply that will take me about 2 months to consume.

If you have a lot, your best bet is to keep it in the freezer, rather than the fridge. It doesn’t change the consistency. And to make it take up less space, you can portion it out into ziplock freezer bags and lay it flat.

Flaxseed meal will not last as long as whole flaxseed. Sticking it in the freezer is a good plan. Anything you plan to freeze for a long time is best kept in a chest freezer rather than the freezer section of the refrigerator, because every time the door openss, the temperature in the freezer changes, which helps to cause freezer burn. And don’t forget to use freezer bags rather than good old storage bags!

But how can you tell if it’s not good anymore?

Whole grains and seeds have some oil (think about wheat germ oil for example). Whole grains and seeds last longer than the ground version, but in this case we are talking about ground flaxseed. Flaxseed has oil in it. If it’s too old, it will smell rancid.
