Trump is about to (or just has) declared a state of emergency at the southern border with Mexico.

The year Trump took office apprehensions of illegal immigrants on the US Mexico border were the lowest they had been since 1971 and less than a quarter of what they were in 2000. There is no emergency unless you consider the president usurping power for his own ends to be an emergency.

It means that I have to sift through a lot more outrage posts on twitter and facebook before I get to something that interests me.

I do not live in your country but as an outsider looking at this is it a scary scenario where a President of any country may try to dictate rather than lead.
This is a reminder to be careful of whom one elects in our country as well? Also to protect the public from individuals whom have dreams of becoming a dictator.

I still believe that an elected leader should only be a representative whom relays to the pubic a decision that is well agreed upon by a body ( whether parliament,Congress/Senate (combined) whom discuss all avenues to ensure the best outcome for the masses.

I don’t think that ONE leader has all the answers, as this is like Historical Kings who had all the authority and we all know what happened to that kind of system.

No more than the other 31 national emergencies that are still in effect from past presidents. We seem to be good at declaring a national emergency but not so good at declaring it over.

If he is using it to siphon off funds from disaster relief and infrastructure projects and other worthy needs (Climate change remediation, anyone?) it will hurt all of us ultimately.

@janbb You understand “he’s in charge and doesn’t need Congress and he already OWNS the Supreme Court” – - – So “it will hurt all of us ultimately.” is only interesting.SMH

Remember his bedside book was written by Adolph Hitler.

I thought we were already supposedly “at war” with “Drugs” and the general concept of “Terror”. Sigh…

I think Trump and his family should have to repay all the damage their stupid regime has done.

It won’t, we’re not.

More reprehensible than Trump’s expressed comprehension of this “emergency”- the flooding of the country with drug laden vermin-is the dismal failure of intellect characterizng his struggles with the issue. No one with any sense believes we can wall our way around illegal
Immigration. At some point it becomes more economical to simply set up luxury hotels on Mexico’s southern borders, house and spoil the refugees and feed them til they’re
too fat to travel.

Not much in the immediate future.

More of the same for the last few years. Dealing with friends and family who hate Trump and will drone on about this. I don’t mind a mention and concern about what Trump is doing, but it’s to such excess at this point with people like my father (who is staying with me for a month) and some friends on Facebook. Plus, the news will cover it morning noon and night ignoring other also important things around the world, which makes me not want to watch at all.

Overload.

Maybe we should all enter every room and answer every phone call in a panicked state, and act super-excited and worried about the STATE OF EMERGENCY! Try to take it seriously, and see if anyone notices how ridiculous that is.

Everyone could constantly phone Homeland Security and report seeing non-white people, and our grave concern given the STATE OF EMERGENCY!

I was thinking this morning, this so called emergency Trump has declared, and so many people seem to believe, reminds me of Facebook friends and acquaintances who were freaking out about the possibility of gays in the military and of gay marriage. They were sure the sky would fall if we allowed those two things. Then finally the laws changed and nothing—the sky stayed up. This state of Emergency regarding the border is a disgrace. Using the term invasion is a disgrace. People who hate taxes want it, which is ironic. It reminds me of when I lived in the Memphis area and people out in the suburbs, who hate taxes, voted for an increase to keep inner city kids out of their school system, and mostly they said they voted that way to keep inner city parents from voting in their school system.

Sorry to go off on a tangent, I know this is about what will change now after the declaration and not about whether there should have been a declaration of a state of emergency.

People’s reaction in the general public, and any change in their life, will depend on how much Trump and the media cover the situation now. People directly affected by the new wall obviously will be experiencing new construction efforts first hand.
