Clearly ”was very famous” should read as ”were very famous”
The band being a collective obviously dictates this.

But on the other hand “band”, though a collective noun, is surely singular in this instance. I think @Jeruba should adjudicate.

I think you should have education enough to concede when you’re wrong, there is no “other hand”

I think there are some exceptions. But generally collective nouns use singular verbs.

The words don’t belong together. People are not the successor of a political regime. It appears that you have joined two unrelated thoughts. A correct presentation depends on what you are actually trying to say.
