Should there be a draft to pick members of the police force?
To ensure that the police is comprised of predominantly normal people, and not trigger happy authoritarians with god complexes.

Great question. But remember – normal, healthy people were involuntarily drafted into war before and did inhuman things. Something about power, maybe.
They just need to take cops from the top shelf and not the bottom, that should solve most problems with them. There are problems with cops these days. The job itself fucks normal people up, many have PSTD, others have a distorted view of people because they deal with the worst of the worst on a daily basis. Average or below average people cannot handle this, they can fake it but many are not psychologically “normal” after being on the job for very long. There is also a stigma about mental health in their circles that is very wrong and very damaging since many suffer in silence. A good number of the seemingly “normal” ones, the ones who can do such a stressful job and not be at all affected are likely to be psychopathic.
You cant force people to change who they are, so no. I wish I had.

People are all different, with varying quirks and proclivities. I doubt there is an archetypal “normal person”.
No. It is obvious that most people think that whatever was done is only illegal if someone gets caught. And if someone gets caught, they must be guilty.
I’ve commented on this before. The main problem is job candidates. If a district is required to have 100 officers, but you really only liked 35 of the candidates, what then?
The obvious answer is that the district will have to hire a number of “less than ideal candidates,’ and just hope for the best.
There are plenty of openings for police officers, but it is an unsafe job, and doesn’t pay well. A lot of applicants are the wrong type of person for the job. But you work with what you have.
^That’s my opinion, from when I worked in law enforcement.
I would add that, in many cases, you don’t find out if someone is wrong for the job until they get into some tough situations….
