When you get into your car to drive, do you strap the seat belt and then turn the key, or do you turn the car on first and then strap in?
As asked. This stems from a conversation this morning.

The vehicles that I use for transportation have no seatbelts.
I’d say it depends on how much of a rush I’m in. If I’m in a rush, I turn the key and may even start driving before I put the belt on. I don’t think I have any one particular routine for this. If I’m not in a rush, I may or may not put the belt on first, may get my sunglasses out, my hook up my phone to the charger, may access the Waze app, it all depends on the circumstances.
Depends n the weather. If it’s unpleasantly hot or cold I turn on the car first to give it that extra six seconds to warm up or cool down. Otherwise, I don’t know, I don’t think about it.
I strap the seatbelt first, before I turn on the car.
Depends on which car, but usually I turn the car on first. Give the car a chance to settle to a lower idle while I situate and belt myself.
I have a Pavlov response to the beep I’ll hear after I turned the ignition.
Then I’ll strap.
Turn the key on first to start the car, sea tbelt alarm goes off, adjust the seat, then buckle up seat belt. ( Its all in the new rented cars now, a safety feature.
@elbanditoroso Yeah, I better be.
When I started driving, in 86, I was refusing to wear a seat belt (don’t ask me why), and did so for years.
Until I got wise and decided to start with it, but the habit of not strapping had grown deep.
So I’m thankful for the beeps that came in later models of cars.
Start then buckle. I figure I’m letting my engine warm up a few seconds longer.
Well, I can tell you for sure that it’s usually one or the other.
I don’t drive, but what I’ve seen from taxi drivers is they keep the belt locked and sit on it.
When I leave the house, i don’t put it on until I finish backing out of my car port.
When I am out in public, I put it on before I start the car.
On cars that do not have a safety belt alarm, the person would adjust the seat for their driving comfort, then start car, then buckle up.
I sit in the seat, turn the key, then put on the seatbelt. If backing up is required, I do that before belting in.
This may not be safe, but it makes it easier to turn backwards to see where I am going.
If the engine is cold, I’ll turn the key and then belt up, while the engine is establishing necessary oil pressure.
If the engine is already warm, I’ll belt up first.
I am quick to strap in because after things I have seen it feels like an anonymous hug, a reassurance that someone, somewhere wants me to be safe.
I start the car first warm up my engine a li’l while I’m buckling up.
