Do you wash plates and silver ware with hot water and soap no matter what they were used for?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47126points) March 22nd, 2019

Depending on the food, I won’t necessarily wash the dish.
Someone mentioned putting a bagel on a plate, and then having to wash the plate. If I used a plate for a bagel, or toast, I’d just wipe the crumbs off and put the plate away.
If I use a sharp knife to cut a loaf of bread, after I cut it I’d swipe it with a dish towel and throw it back in the drawer.
Do you wash everything, no matter what it’s used for?

Yes. It’s wasteful of time, water and energy, but if a dish/glass knife was put “out” then it needs to be re-washed before it can go back in the drawer. I never claimed to be perfect.

A glass is a bit different because when you drink you do get your “germs” on the glass. It swishes back in to the glass.

I see where you’re going. If I use a measuring cup or bowl to measure tap water, I have no compunction against placing the bowl or cup in the dish rack to dry without washing or rinsing it.

Yes. It’s touched with hands that might be dirty. The bagel would likely have butter on it, which gets on the plate. The only time I won’t is maybe if a knife is used for something like bread, I may keep the knife on the side of the sink in case I need it later, but I wouldn’t put it away.

Well, you would know if your own hands were dirty, right? And it’s the same hands that put them away.
If something besides the bread got on the plate, like butter, I’d put it in the dishwasher.

That’s my thing. If I use a plate, it gets washed. Whether other people think it’s logical is not my concern.

It’s just too easy in my case to place the plate or silver in the dishwasher, which is close to the counters & butcher block or table surfaces, but some 15 steps from shelves in the dish pantry.

Well, now I’m gonna have a bagel with cream cheese…on a paper towel. :D All this talk of bagels is making me hungry.

15 steps??!! Dude. I can walk across my whole house in less than 15 steps!

I wash everything every time before putting it away. Sometimes, a plate that just had toast on it, we might leave on the counter to use it an hour later, or for the other person to use it. Same with a bread knife, but it gets washed eventually that day, or put in the dishwasher.

The only exception is a measuring cup for water.

Even bread has germs. The most familiar to people is finding mold on bread. The spores are there microscopically way before you see it with the naked eye. But it’s not like the kitchen is sterile anyway, but soap and water does significantly reduce germs.
