I have for the first time in the 1990“s went skydiving , and had previously never been in an airplane.
It was an all day training on the procedures of hanging from the wing, then letting go and counting down one one thousand to I think 15 one thousand before pulling the cord to open the leader ( can’t remember the name for it). One falls fast as one is counting(scary falling).
We were all crammed in like sardines with the side panel of the airplane open all of this time.
Scary as each one stepped out hanging on to the thin metal rod on the wing to get to the tip.
I loved the feeling of being in the air in that plane and viewing the surroundings below, it was awesome! It was then that I decided to go through with the jump.
Edged out to the tip, feeling exhilarated and waited for the signal from our trainer to jump, wait 15 sec then pull the rip cord which shocked me as it pulled me very fast and with such force way up into the sky away from the plane.
My shoot opened up and then it was serene and very slow going down, what a surprise!
It is at this time that it is the most dangerous as some in the past felt so excited that they FORGOT to pull the other rip cord to open the main parachute!
As I went with a reputable and radio controlled group, we had radio contact on us the entire time, directing us as to where to land, and to get out of the way of the others jumping as well.
It only cost us $90 Canadian then and today I see that it is now $250!
By the way the experience only lasts three min to land on the ground.
( and landing on ones feet is hard to do, and it takes a few jumps to learn the technique). It was a Fun experience, but once was enough for my budget.
Others had a passport of sorts to keep a record of jumps etc.
And I only went to the 3000 foot jump not the 10,000 foot jump which had been very scary for me on my first try.
They automatically take pictures of you as you let go of the wing ( camera on the wing tip)and sell this to one for a souvenir.
I was in my late 40’s when I tried this, so anyone can do it.
