What do you think of this YouTube video on why you can't divide by zero?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24945points) April 4th, 2019

Eternity vs. infinity.
What I got from the video is that; Zero times infinity is all numbers. Anything divided by zero is infinity.
Is Eternity vs. infinity. opposites?

Also are the symbols for Eternity and infinity the same? ∞

Yes. Eternity and infinity are the same things. One is mathematical, the other is a spiritual concept. ∞

Eternity refers to infinite time.

As the video indicates, there are mathematical systems that allow for division by 0.

The study of infinity is rather interesting. It turns out that there is more than one infinity There are as many whole numbers as there are whole fractions, but there are more decimal numbers than fractions. There are more sets of decimals than there are decimals, and more sets of sets of decimals than sets of decimals. We can in fact name infinitely many infinities.

Interesting.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t put food on the table or pay the rent.

Infinity is defined as A NUMBER bigger than you are able to measure. Most people casually assume a much sloppier meaning, “unlimited”. That is not a problem since the meaning is usually determined by context.

Example: If you look at something from two positions it appears to shift by some angle depending on how far away it is and the length of your baseline. If you look from opposite sides of the Earth’s orbit, that is the longest baseline we have, and accurate measurements can be made out to about 3200 light years. Beyond that we are guessing. Highly scientific guessing, but guessing all the same. That is why when you try to look up the biggest stars, the figures get very uncertain beyond 3200 light years. That is “infinity”.

BTW I missed the part about eternity.

If you search the definition at google, it contradicts itself. First it says unending time, then it says timeless, then it gets into religious bulloney that does not apply. But the word actually means without beginning or end. The correct word for most cases is “everlasting”.

@SmartAZ Infinity can not be measured, even if you were able to. It’s not even a natural number at all and no, it doesn’t depend on “context” or perception. It doesn’t depend on the angle either. Pi is a good example.
