Why do you suppose Hitler was a vegetarian?

Asked by josie (30934points) April 30th, 2019 from iPhone

Historians and contemporaries say that Hitler was a (fairly) strict vegetarian during the war years 1939 to his death.

The common reason given is that he did not like cruelty to animals.

This seems odd for a guy who was one of history’s greatest sponsers of mass murder.

I wonder what his reasons truly were.

According to this New York Times article, he wasn’t truly a vegetarian, but occasionally dabbled for health reasons, including suffering from flatulence, and sweatiness. Some biographers describe him eating ham, liver, and game.

I vaguely remember references to Hitler caring deeply about animals when I was watching the movie the Zookeepers wife. A great movie by the way.

I googled and there is actually a Wikipedia page about it. I skimmed it, and it talks about Composer Wagner being a vegetarian too, I had no idea.

My random best guess is that during the war that meat was hard to come by. Seeing that trade with waring nations was disturbed.
Also fyi on NatGeo or History channels said that Hitler was a drug addict. Sorry that I don’t have a link.

He wasn’t. A vegetarian diet was an occasional dalliance for him that he never held to for very long at a time.

There’s a gag about no room for meat in his oven but i’m far too classy to go there…
