Why do you suppose Hitler was a vegetarian?

Historians and contemporaries say that Hitler was a (fairly) strict vegetarian during the war years 1939 to his death.
The common reason given is that he did not like cruelty to animals.
This seems odd for a guy who was one of history’s greatest sponsers of mass murder.
I wonder what his reasons truly were.
