It seems I lied for a long time to myself about how much weight I was gaining until I saw a few photos! That is very common from what I hear.

I agree about the “quit any time I want.” It’s interesting who tells that lie. Do people really tell themselves that? Or, they just tell other people?

I’m going to clean my closet out. I’m going to sort through my piles of papers. I’m going to start my diet. I’m going exercise more. I tell myself all of those.

Dutchess_lll's avatar

We just tell other people that. We kind of feel like it’s true at the time tho.

@Dutchess_III I never say anything like that. I will say, “I’m going X tomorrow” and not follow through, so that’s like a lie, but the people who say, “I can quit anytime,” are usually alcoholics in my experience.

Dutchess_lll's avatar

Well I wasn’t referring to you. You asked if we told that to ourselves or to other people.
The people who say it are addicted to something. In my case it was cigarettes.

JLeslie's avatar

@Dutchess_III I didn’t think you were talking about me. I appreciated you answering the question.

Edit: not everyone does it though. My aunt was a smoker, she never would say I can quit any time. I have friends who drink who say things like, “the French have wine every night, it doesn’t make them alcoholics,” to justify their own daily consumption. Then others say will say they can quit any time.

I had quit smoking for 8 years but picked it back up. My Mom expressed concern and I told her I could quit again anytime! I guess “anytime” was about 25 years later. Bleh. At least I did it eventually.

@Dutchess_III My dad has a very similar story about his smoking. He had quit for several years, then started again, and about 10 years later he finally quit again.
