Do you shop at dollar stores?
I’ve honestly never been to one.
They are not as common in bougie areas like the one I grew up in.
They were just talking about dollar stores on NPR and how some cities are saturated with them and that they have the same effect that Wal-Mart has had on small, local business. A number of cities have passed laws to limit the number of dollar stories within their boundaries.

I have been in them , but I don’t shop there. They seem to be filled with a lot of cheap junk of which I don’t need any more, and the food items are processed and near expiration, so I wouldn’t buy them anyway.
I have shopped them lots. Each one seems to specialize in certain things. My types of purchases; kitchen utensils, padlocks, party supplies, picture frames, basic first aid items, occasional cheap kid distractions like coloring books and marbles. I had one which is gone now which was my supply of Pixie Stix for Halloween. Kids get very excited about Pixie Stix.
I admit it. I had to google Bougie.
But my answer to the question is that I have been in Dollar Stores, but not very often. I don’t think the prices are as good as you can get elsewhere. You would have to be a savvy shopper to know the price of a 16 Oz bottle of shampoo at Walmart is the better deal than a 10 Oz bottle that is only pennies cheaper.
All the time. We have 2 nice ones in our area. Dollar Tree, and The 99 Cent Only Store.
I buy tons of produce and frozen food at 99 Cent Only, and I get all sorts of food, hand sanitizer, deodorant, wet wipes, foil, ziplock bags, Hallmark greeting cards, gift bags, books, art supplies, craft items, cleaning supplies, holiday items, office supplies, you name it, at both stores.
Some of my friends are teachers, and one is a girl scout troop leader, they shop there all the time. They get decorations and party favors, and school supplies, and arts and crafts supplies. They even have gardening stuff, and flower arranging supplies.
I am a price comparing person. I also shop in Target, Walmart, Costco, and the regular grocery store.
I’ve been to a few and they are always filthy and a mess. I can get the same deals or better by looking at ads for the other stores in my area.
I recently went to Dollar Tree for the first time. I was low on cash and needed a can of cat food. I can usually get a can for under $1 at my neighborhood grocer but I thought I might be able to save a few pennies buying at a Dollar store. I asked the cashier what the price was and she gave me a look as if I were stupid. She waited, sighed, then snickered “everything here is $1.” The woman behind me laughed. If everything in the store is $1 then why was the Snickers bar in the check out lane advertised for .89¢? I left the can right there and walked out. They won’t have my business.
Twice in the last ten years. Basically, they never have what I want.
I do, occasionally. If my middle school-aged daughter is having a party, then the dollar store may be where we buy party props (pretty plastic drinking glassware, for example).
There are groups on Facebook where people make crafts from exclusively dollar store items.
Some things are cheaper in Walmart, like @Kardamom mentioned, per ounce may be cheaper on sale at a supermarket or at Walmart. Or sometimes in the dollar store, something like abrasive cleanser may be 88 cents in Walmart and a dollar in a dollar store. Obviously, you’re better off getting it at Walmart, then. Shampoo may be on sale for 75 cents at the supermarket, but will always be a dollar at the dollar store.
Many dollar store items, like plastic table cloths, are now a dollar at Walmart.
Not generally, though I have a handful of times. Mainly out of convenience for an item or two where quality wasn’t really a foremost concern (such as a cheap broom just to sweep leaves off my steps).
Once a year I used to get cleaning supplies, like pine sol, (until I found out that It is not to be used with hard wood floors) , and a handful of three musketeer chocolate bars. Sometimes I get some cup of beef noodles. I bought two oven mitts last year and they are mostly ok.
All the time.
People would be surprised at what you can find at a 99 cents only store.
I’ve gotten lots of food items that are also sold at our local organic bougie markets.
Organic strawberries, organic blueberries, organic bananas, Chao non-dairy cheese, Oui yogurt, Ripple milk, Herbert’s lemonade, Voss water, Califia almond milk, Noosa yogurt, Terra chips, Siggi yogurt, Humm kombucha…
And that’s just the food and produce that I can remember off the top of my head.
Also scored a bunch of Yeti bottles for Christmas presents. Those are pretty bougie.
@raum
Yeah, a lot of the inventory in those places comes from other store closeouts.
@raum Voss water is très bougie. I might have to try one of these stores some time. :)
I’ve gotten some really nice wrapping paper at a dollar store. Sometimes with certain things you just luck out.
