Should emergency vehicles have a device that turns all lights green?

Things are bad enough with the noise and flashing lights. When I was a boy, my city ran an experiment, wherein they allowed specific kids of the school safety patrols to control the traffic signals at some busy intersections. The experiment lasted nearly 3 days.
