When you see some of your favorite childhood stars grown up is it ever jarring to you?

Asked by JLeslie (65790points) June 2nd, 2019 from iPhone

This is a totally superficial and trivial question, but in real life almost all of the people I know from my school days look better as adults. They became more beautiful as they aged, especially between the ages of 35–55.

When I look at photos of child actors then and now, a lot of them look so different. They went from being cute or pretty to not so much anymore. Do you see it the same way? If so, do you think it’s just when it’s actors who aren’t in the limelight anymore, and we didn’t see them in each stage of getting older?

Some are even more fabulous as they aged, I’m not saying all, I never say or mean all.

Not just child actors. Rock stars.

Mick Jagger is 75
Roger Daltrey 75
Bette Midler 73
David Crosby 77
Neil Young 73
James Taylor 71
Judy Collins 80
Joan Baez 78

When I was a kid these folks were in their twenties and thirties.

@elbanditoroso But even as they age, many o fetch rock stars look pretty damng good for their age- Bette Midler and Joan Baez in particular. Jane Fonda looks hot for someone in her 80s.

But to @JLeslie‘s question, seeing a child or teen start years later can be jarring. When I was in elementary school, people said I looked like Jerry Matthers (The Beav). Thank God our looks veered in different directions in our twenties.

What they look like today doesn’t matter. Happiness comes from hearing about their success stories in finding their niche as they grow up. Looks change; welcome to life.

Celebrity life involves heavy make – up under grueling bright damaging lights which is the result of the skin aging faster , not to mention the chemicals used in the cosmetics.
I sincerely hope that in the present there are more safer products to use instead ?
Then there is the need to have implants of which some cause cancer, and what of old age? Does one get those implants taken out later only to be left with scars etc

There certainly IS a high price to pay for Fame, so acting etc is not for the faint of heart and they should realize the eventual outcome in taking on a celebrity lifestyle which is fleeting at best.

It is always very surprising to see girls who were child actresses after they go through their teen years.

Always jarring and depressing even since celluloid images never age. And reality does.

@Inspired_2write Make-up gets a bad wrap. Foundation actually protects the skin from the sun, even when it has no spf it’s a layer of protection. I know many many girls and women who wear make-up daily, don’t usually wash it off at night, don’t do any big steps to take care of their skin, and they have good skin. I’m one of them. Wrinkles are my problem, and they started way before I started wearing make-up, and they are the worst in the places I don’t wear make-up like my neck and décolleté.

I don’t think studio lights cause skin aging. Most children sit in bright lights all day in school. I know it’s not necessarily the same lighting, but kids in general are in lights, in front of TV’s, play outside, etc.

@zenvelo Matthers did change drastically. You can still see the Beav in his face, but went from cute boy to not very attractive middle aged man.

The girl who played Cindy on The Brady Bunch shocked me the first time I saw her as an adult. She’s actually fairly attractive, but to me so different from the little girl with pigtails I can’t get used to looking at her knowing she was Cindy

I find some female actresses look better now, as older adults, than they did when they were younger. This is just my opinion. Two examples I can think of are Jennifer Anniston and Kelly Ripa. Jennifer Anniston lost some weight when she got famous during the “Friends” era, got her hair straightened, and to me, she looks almost like a different person. Kelly Ripa also lost some weight when she started on “Regis and Kelly” and also, if you look at her teeth in photos when she started on Regis and Kelly, they were imperfect whereas now, they’re perfect. She probably got caps. Both she and Jennifer Anniston have lightened their hair and in my opinion, they look better as older adults then they did prior to becoming famous.

Jane Fonda for sure has had extensive plastic surgery. I think all women in show biz have had plastic surgery. If you look at the chin and neck of an “average” lady you may know, and you look at the chin and neck of any famous actress, the famous actress’s chin and neck are tight, whereas a person “in real life” has had some sagging of the skin.

@JLeslie: you should wear sunscreen on your neck and decollette every day. I do. I think when an older person has a spotty, saggy neck and chest it’s not a good look.

What jars me is seeing some of my favorite actors all old and shit.

JLeslie's avatar

@jca2 I do wear SPF every day, but I started doing when damage had already been done. Plus, I tried this laser treatment that made the wrinkles worse. I’m not very spotty, I know just what you are talking about, but I am wrinkled.

I agree regarding Jennifer Anniston, but the first I saw her she was already an adult in the show Friends. Kelly Ripa sometimes looks too skinny to me, but she does look better older rather than younger. I think most women look better in their 40’s than their 20’s.

I don’t get shocked by that so much as I do with actors who I remember in movies when I was younger, but then see them now on a late night talk show and am blown out of my mind by how old they look.

I just saw a photo of Val Kilmer recently. He has throat cancer. He looks like he had his cheeks artificially blown up, like with fillers or Botox. He looks weird and old.

mazingerz88's avatar

^^Sad to hear that. Liked him since Real Genius.

Dutchess_III's avatar

He just got old fashioned fat @jca2. ;(

jca2's avatar

He’s definitely not fat, @Dutchess_III. Maybe his face is puffy from steroids for the cancer treatment, I’m not sure. He had a tracheotomy.

Take a look: https://www.thesun.co.uk/tvandshowbiz/8644887/val-kilmer-throat-cancer-battle/

That’s a weird picture of him. It almost looks like someone photoshopped his head onto a weird body.

After Tombstone, 1993, he got fat. He didn’t get cancer until 2017. It kind of sounds like he beat it, though! There is a TopGun sequel set for 2020. He supposed to be in it. I wish him all the best. He was so hot. My favorite was the character he played in Willow.

jca2's avatar

If you google him, you’ll see all the recent photos of him look the same way.

I think his neck is really skinny because of the trach.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Yes, I know. I’m not doubting the pictures are real. They just look so…odd. I hope he comes back from it all OK.
