Are the words in this little ditty a bit disconcerting?
My mom used to sing it to me when I was a child. I liked it because it was simple and easy to memorize. I haven’t thought of it in years, but the other day it came up on my radar. Here is the song,
“My mama told me
If I was goody
That she would buy me
A rubber dolly.
“My auntie told her
I kissed a soldier
Now she won’t buy me
A rubber dolly.”
Um. What? LOL!

“Here’s to the maid who steals a kiss and runs to tell her mother,
She’s foolish foolish thing, for she’ll not get another”.
Kissing in old folk songs is euphemistic for girls fooling around and being a bit naughty.
I understand that, but is she a child, playing with dolls, or a very immature 16 year old who still plays with dolls and also kisses soldiers?
Is it sung like a jump rope tune?
Or maybe the clap clap song. I know I’ve heard it somewhere before. I found it!! Dialup on youtube Shirley Ellis the clapping song.
I think I remember girls facing each other and jumping rope double dutch and doing this routine.
Yes, Shirley Ellis. I’m trying to remember that far back. I know we played clapping games at recess but they were like, “Under the bamboo, under the tree, my darling, true love for me my darling true love for you. When we get married how happy we will be, under the bamboo tree tree tree!”
That’s an old Woody Guthrie song, slightly different.
Shirley Ellis also did the name game
“Bannana fanna fo fanna” song?
SO MANY IMPORTANT THINGS TO TEACH MY GRANDKIDS AND SO LITTLE TIME!!!
@Dutchess_III You can teach kids The Name Game in one long car trip.
“Do Chuck!”
CHUCK CHUCK BO BUCK BANANA FANNA FO…. Nice try @zenvelo! :D
The last “long” car trip we took 5 year old Zoey started singing John Denver’s “Country Roads,” right out of the blue. Rick almost drove off the road! I was flummoxed. She knows that song, boy!
They pick em up mountain mama.
Well, her preschool was within a retirement compound, so they had zillions of grammas and grammpas. One of the grampas had a zither, and he’d play that and sing “Country Woads,” (her pronunciation) at least once a week. They sang it at her “graduation” 3 weeks ago.
And “MOUNTAIN MAMA!!” was her favorite line! Boy, she belted it out!
My favorite line too. Little kids are absolutely the BEST when it comes to enthusiasm!
My cell phone avatar is a pic of her in the back of the SUV singing it.
