Did you know Trump played a key role in getting the Central Park 5 convicted?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47127points) June 3rd, 2019

He spent $85,00 on newspaper ads that proclaimed inflammatory things like “BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY. BRING BACK OUR POLICE.”
He placed an open letter that read, in part, “New York families of all races “have had to give up the pleasure of a leisurely stroll in the Park at Dusk” because of “roving thousands of wild criminals.”

No, I didn’t know that.

And I see that’s $85,000 (circa 1990 dollars), not $85.00 as the typo suggests.

I think stating it as ’...played a key role…” is overstating it. he was vocal about it, and kept it up even after they were exonerated.. But much of NY thought the same way.

there was a national outcry about youths wilding which turned out to be false.

I was just quoting the Times headline @zenvelo. @zenvelo

My bad @Zaku. Typo.

@Dutchess_III I didn’t mean I was disagreeing, just that I didn’t know about it.

I think you’re referring to the comment I made to @zenvelo. He said “Played a key role” was overstating it. I said I was just quoting the article.

I didn’t know about it either.

trump reminds me of Americans who watched and gawked at lynchings. I won’t be surprised if he lived in that era in the past he would be one of those who instigated one.

Crime in NYC had spiked during that time, and the city was very afraid. Already the park was a place not to be in at night alone. Crack cocaine is blamed for some of the increases in crime in cities like NY, LA, and Detroit at the time. People were frustrated that NYC had become so unsafe during the 80’s, and had no tolerance for stories of people getting harmed. I don’t know if we can call Trump putting an ad in the paper as racist or unfair, but what happened to those boys was a travesty. Ten years before that the Son of Sam killer terrorized NY, and getting the word out was how we tried to keep people safe.

The courts should have corrected for whatever had been done in the media. Think about how it is now in present time. Cameras and media are everywhere. Anyone can take a photo on their camera and affect the public’s perception. You can post something on facebook and make it public to the entire planet practically. Thank goodness for DNA testing, and that evidence was still available.

Your article says the victim still believes the boys were possibly somehow involved, and that they had been up to some sort of illegal activity? I didn’t even know there was still some sort of question about that, I thought they were considered to be completely innocent and wrongly accused of any bad behavior. Not that they should have been jailed for the crime as they were, but I just didn’t know that until I read your article.

Here’s a good article on the actual attacker. https://www.thecut.com/2019/06/the-attackers-other-victims-in-the-central-park-five-case.html This guy doesn’t seem to be someone who ever worked with anyone. He is a murderer and rapist and very violent. I believe it’s possible that the victim was just in shock and actually doesn’t remember what happened to her correctly. In another article it says that the victim never remembered what happened after she came out of her coma 12 days later. So if she believes they are guilty it’s probably because of what she was told all those years and because they confessed to the crime and then later took it back saying they were coerced into a confession. As or Trump. I don’t recall him taking out ads when the victims of the real rapist were non white. And some of those were murdered.
Shameful how this guy could’ve been stopped much earlier.

I think he just took ads our locally, in New York, @Pandora.

The whole situation is utterly shameful.

^^Boggles the mind how much support this man still gets. I thought there weren’t that many racists in America anymore.

And I refuse to buy that BS about voters using this man to drain whatever in DC or change the status quo. That’s just downright dumb. From the very beginning all the way to the present and hopefully not for anymore number of years.

If this man wins again, we might as well crown him King until he passes away and his eldest son takes over. Let’s give his supporters the dumb nation they deserve.

I know @mazingerz88. It stuns me too.

@mazingerz88 Are you saying you think if he is elected again he will change our government enough that he won’t be leaving after 8 years? A friend of mine said that very thing to me last week. I also remember people saying it about Obama. I thought it was ridiculous when people said it about Obama, and I don’t believe that will be the case with Trump either.

^^It’s either he already changed what is essentially good in American style democracy into irreversible ruin or cynical people like myself is merely blowing this sordid episode in American history out of proportion. I truly hope I’m underestimating that innate goodness and intelligence of the American people.

I just don’t believe that laws will be changed allowing more than two consecutive terms, and I don’t believe there will be some sort of hostile dictator type of takeover. Although, I do believe he can cause great harm, and send the country down a path that might take a long time to steer back onto a better course.
