Some wear Spanx or something similar, which is basically a girdle.
You can tell sometimes. Like when a woman is stuffed like a sausage in a tight fitting dress and can’t move easily, good chance she has Spanx on from under breasts right down to her panty line or even thighs. Sometimes it might be like a skort, or down to the ankles under slacks.
Most women don’t wear them though. Not in America anyway.
Not since many are more athletic minded and keep in good shape, although the very out of shape ladies probably buy these for Festive Holidays ( New Years Eve etc).
Lots of tight girdle/ spandex undergarments suited for redefining and giving shape to the body are available more so these days with the emphasis on body image.
In very early 1960’s young girls had girdles since pantyhose was not invented yet, but after it was introduced girdles were gladly given up due to the unbearable heat in summers.
Most of the women that I see seem to flaunt their love handles.
I don’t know if traditional girdles are manufactured any more. My grandmother used to wear one – this was the late 1960’s and 70’s. It had straps and hooks and it was a big beast of a thing. Now, as mentioned above, there are spandex things which are more forgiving and less lumpy, no straps as it doesn’t have to hold up stockings. I never wore anything like that. I also don’t wear dresses if I can help it.
I was expected to wear a girdle from age 13 to 19. Back then proper young ladies weren’t supposed to let anyone see anything on their body jiggle. Only bad girls jiggled in public. Once I moved away from home, I took pride in taking the scissors to my girdle & I never looked back!!! Now they have invented Spanx which is very similar to the old time girdle. I hear a lot of young girls commenting about their Spanx. I used to work with some middle age women who wore them. Some are worn much like the old time girdle & others are hidden is their swim suit or around the midriff of their dress. No matter where or what it’s holding in, it’s still similar to wearing a girdle!!!
I do and lots of my friends do, fat or skinny isn’t the point. Like @LadyMarissa, in some circumstances or more conservative areas, jiggling is not ideal, and there are a lot of form-fitting clothing that look better when you’re all tucked in proper.
That whole thing about not jiggling in conservative circles is something completely new to me and very interesting. Wearing “proper” undergarments isn’t a new term or idea to me, but I just never understood that girdles were part of that in that way. For me girdles or Spanx had to do with looking thinner, smoother, and sexier of all things.
I wonder if the idea of girls needing to wear them actually comes from it’s more difficult to get a girdle off than a regular pair of bikini panties. Like it’s closer to a chastity belt than simple cotton underwear.
@JLeslie In your area do men wear undershirts or wife beaters under their top shirt or dress shirt? That’s something I noticed while travelling, that men were not wearing undershirts like they do here. I could see male nips! haha
IF I have to wear Spanx to look sexier for him, I don’t need him in my life!!! I’m a well rounded woman & IF that’s not his speed, I’ll repeat…I’m the wrong woman for him!!!
I was allowed to juggle anytime I wanted to; however, jiggling would condemn me to hell!!! Only naughty girls jiggle in public. You could bounce a quarter off a good girl’s ass!!!
@LadyMarissa You are cracking me up today lady!
And if you really want to impress my man, he’d much prefer the jiggling over spanx! He says I get all ‘tied down’ for work lol
@KNOWITALL I’ve seen both, but I think most men do. I’ll have to pay attention now.
My husband wears undershirts almost every day, even under t-shirts at times. I think mostly to protect the underarm of the outer garment, maybe it’s for the nips too? I never asked him. I know he thinks it’s odd that men where tank style undershirts since it doesn’t protect the underarm.
When my in-laws were living with me I felt I had to buy bras to go under my pajama top with my FIL in the house. I bought a couple with no wire, and more stretchy just to cover my breasts better and hold them up a little.
@LadyMarissa Well times have changed, and the hard body, bounce a quarter of her ass is now often in thong underwear, with her midriff showing, and double D cup fake boobs.
By the way, shapewear can actually be bad for your health when worn too tight.
@JLeslie Yes, the gentlmen all wear the complete under t-shirt. I appreciate it and it looks nice. Nothing like seeing man nips at a bus meeting…lol, gross.
I asked my husband and he said he started wearing undershirts in Florida, because of the heat. It has nothing to do with modesty. He never wore them when he was younger, and his dad didn’t either.
My dad wore undershirts under his tailored woven shirts if I remember correctly. Under his Navy summer whites (I’m not sure that’s the correct name) I think he always wore one, but I’m guessing it was required.
