Once you can upload your mind to the internet, would devils still be interested in purchasing your soul?

At the very least, I would think, the quality of favours he would offer you for it, would sharply decline.
No more “endless riches”, or “world fame”. You would be lucky to be offered a monthly 500€ stipend, or a like on facebook, for one copy of your soul.

Are you still interested in mine?

I’ve been trying since I was thirteen years old to consult with the devil about selling my soul.

Nothing ever happens.

Isn’t it a bit presumptuous to assume your soul would be worth “endless riches” to him anyway? I guess it’s a matter of supply and demand, and there’s no shortage of people offering… A like on FB seems a bit cheap though.

Define “soul.”

You know, this whole “selling your soul” thing is all a big misunderstanding.

Back in the days of Jesus, when he was living near the Sea of Galilee, he and his friends did a lot of fishing. There are 18 types of fish that can be found in the Galilee, one of which – probably the best of which – was Sole. Very tasty fish. Anyway, they were pretty successful – almost every day they came back with extra catch that they wouldn’t eat or need for their families.

One day Satan came by and was really hungry for fish – he hadn’t had a good protein meal in quite a while and he saw that there was fresh sole on the dock. He was eager to buy some fish and make himself dinner.

It was at that point Satan said “Will you sell me your sole?” – and of course, the fisherman said yes.

All the rest of the stuff about sin and guilt – that’s bullshit. Satan was buying sole for dinner.

“upload your mind to the internet” — currently fiction

“devils” — always fiction

“soul” — likely fiction or, at least, a misnomer

Therefore, not worries.

@elbanditoroso Actually it was the other way around.

The fishermen thought they were selling their sole. But after the bargain was made. it was revealed that Satan meant something else.

(Thanks for the story, btw)

My answer is just a slightly different version of @cookieman ‘s:

* “upload your mind to the internet” is at most a data and algorithmic model of something.

* “devils interested in purchasing your soul” is a metaphor at best. As a fictional or misled-Christian thing, the computer model of someone isn’t going to be anything that fictional devil would be interested in.

* “soul” in this context is also just part of that Christian metaphor, and almost all interpretations of it would also not be interested in the computer model.

* “soul” in the sense of consciousness or spirit seems to be something that would have no interaction with a computer model, though one could try to make a computer model to try (and fail) to represent it, which again, wouldn’t actually be a soul, any more than a life in Pac Man is anything outside the data and imagined context of the game.

I might be willing to part with a copy of my soul if I can keep the original.
