Do you think long toenails are weird?

Asked by KNOWITALL (29896points) July 24th, 2019

Not super long but a not squared off at the end either.

The reason I’m asking is my asian friend does and hers are beautiful.

Thoughts? Too weird or pretty?

I don’t like at all. And those things are deadly in bed.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Fine! From my pov they are very lovely. I don’t find feet generally attractive so it feels like I’m dressing them up a bit.

I’m not even going to ask what you do with feet in the sack buddy…haha

kritiper's avatar

Heck yes! If I don’t keep my toe nails trimmed real short, I trash socks left and right!

KNOWITALL's avatar

@kritiper haha, well without being gender biased, these are mostly for sandal-wearing folks, I’d assume.

Do you like them on the pics?

kritiper's avatar

@KNOWITALL Sorry, I didn’t download the pics because my old DUM takes SO long to do it.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@kritiper No worries, haha! I’ve broken so many of my toes, it’s not even funny, so it just kind of makes them feel ‘prettier’.

Brian1946's avatar

I don’t think they’re weird if the organism that has them is a terrestrial vertebrate predator.

These look dangerous and I wouldn’t want to be ahead of them in a densely populated line.

Also, if they stubbed their toe, the nail could be torn from its bed because of the extra length and the proportionately weaker base.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Brian True. My husband said ‘They’re pretty but how will you wear shoes?’

I wore my Sperry loafers today, was fine. Not too long yet, half inch or less.

Google had a LOT of pics, its pretty popular.

@KNOWITALL That’s a weapon, so sharp.
The 1st link apparently is inappropriate by the way.

Weapon was my first thought.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Flo Really? Sorry.

@flo DUM = Dial Up Modem
Remember those?

Dutchess_lll's avatar

Yes. And gross.

gorillapaws's avatar

Not my thing, but when it comes to aesthetics, I think people should do what makes them happy.

Pandora's avatar

I’m with @Dutchess_lll Gross. Toes are never pretty. Except for baby toes and little kids They always look like lopped off fingers. I don’t find feet hideous but there is nothing attractive. Nail polish can just make your feet look polished or clean and neat. Long nails just makes it look like you are trying to make them look like hands. Just weird and freaky looking. Especially when they go over the edges of your shoes.

JLeslie's avatar

I couldn’t open the first link.

I don’t like long toenails.

One of the nail salons I’ve been to where I live cuts toenails a little too long. The first time I had a pedicure there I didn’t pay attention well when she was working on my toes, and then once she already started painting I didn’t make her go back and cut all my toenails, but they were too long. They looked like week 4 just before getting ready to have another pedicure.

The next time I was there (I get a pedicure maybe 4 times a year at most, I usually do my own nails) the woman next to me when I first sat down, was instructing the woman doing her nails to cut her toenails shorter. It’s a thing at that salon.

I think it’s to make more money. You have to get your nails done more often if they are long. You can’t where closed toed shoes with long nails. I live in the land of sunshine, but if you play golf or zumba you need to wear sneakers.

I don’t like very long fingernails either. More than half a centimeter above the nail bed is too much, although I do like when they are 1–3 millimeters. If they are cut to the nail bed it looks very young or sporty to me. I was at a doctor’s office a month ago to pay a bill, and the receptionist had nails an inch long and I thought it was completely unprofessional. She didn’t do anything medical, but still, gross. Nails would be part of my dress code in my office if I were a doctor.

In my opinion, disgusting!

LadyMarissa's avatar

It’s not my cup of tea; however, I feel that if they make you feel better, then go for it!!! I liked the shorter, longer ones on youtube much better than the freakishly long ones. Now, the spears in the pic did leave me feeling a little put off because they look weird & I feel that they should have to be registered as a weapon!!! Actually, those don’t even look real & I’m assuming that they are a new line of press on nails. IF not, I bet her hubby sleeps in a separate bed!!!

Since my stroke, I have a difficult time getting to my nails in order to keep them trim. The few times that they grew longer than I had meant for them to do, I noticed that when I wore regular shoes, the nails tended to curl under & started to wrap around the end of my toes. It wasn’t fun getting them back under control, so now I’m more vigilant on keeping them trimmed.

You seem to enjoy them & that’s fine with me. I’m not required to look at them if I don’t care for the way they look.

raum's avatar

Even if it’s the norm, I think the cultural custom to grow out and paint fingernails is weird.

If they are keeping them clean, I don’t see the toenail thing as being weirder than the fingernail thing.

anniereborn's avatar

I think it looks yucky.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Fine, you guys win. After the Q, I was talking with hubs again last night, he doesn’t care either way, he was just trying to make me happy. Guess the new trend is not for me, surprise surprise. Oh well, a few weeks of it was fun. I’m too afraid I’ll rip the whole nail off when I’m walking the dogs or something.

Harper1234's avatar

Not only weird..but to me totally gross!

LadyMarissa's avatar

@KNOWITALL My ex insisted on keeping his longer than was considered normal & I can tell you…from my side of the bed…they are DANGEROUS!!! I woke up many a morning with gashes in my legs where he had cut me with them while rolling over. The very first time it happened, it freaked me out when I discovered my leg bleeding for no apparent reason. Once I got it cleaned up, I figured out what had happened but the ass didn’t care!!!

I feel that this is more of a decision to be made after a serious discussion between you & your husband as, in the long run, it affects both of you & none of us!!!

KNOWITALL's avatar

@LadyMarissa Meh, hubs isn’t into feet so he doesn’t care.

He’s the one with RLS and sleep issues, so I totally see your pov.

It was worth a shot, but if everyone thinks it’s weird, I certainly don’t want to be perceived that way, especially in my professional life. Thanks!!

Dutchess_lll's avatar

It’s not about being “into feet” @KNOWITALL. It has nothing to do with sex either. Just changing positions during the night and you can tear the skin on his legs. They’re thicker than fingernails, and harder…like claws.

flo's avatar

@KNOWITALL Is your “sorry” re. your 1st link I referred to or the “weapon”? If it’s about the link, what was the content in the link if not inappropriate? (If inappropriate I wouldn’t have tried it, if I saw NSFW in the title. By the way @JLeslie also said re. the link.

Brian1946's avatar

@KNOWITALL

How about injecting yourself with feline DNA, so that your toenails become retractable? ;-)

LadyMarissa's avatar

^I like that idea!!! It’s a lot safer for a sleeping partner with RLS!!! ;)

flo's avatar

@kritiper OK, I would’ve expected that to be in the list though.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Flo It was a foot fetish site. I didnt know it was NSFW lol. Just feet! Haha, even I’m not that conservative!! Ha

jca2's avatar

I think they look bizarre.

One wrong step or stubbing your toe and the toe will be ripped out. How could one wear anything but sandals?

I haven’t seen anybody with nails like that. Being cynical, I wonder if it’s just something to get people to click on the site (click bait).

flo's avatar

It looks just for sensationalism. How can anyone take even one step with those nails, *even on carpet made of cotton or something? Impossible.

Patty_Melt's avatar

Not impossible, but walking would have to look like someone wearing swim fins.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@patty I only tried a few months, never got close to the weird stuff. Just not short and square. Longer and rounded looks nice.

LexiAnn84's avatar

Sigh. Oh KnowItAll, I thought you were a girl after my own heart. I’ve kept my toenails a bit longer now for about a year, and here in Phoenix I am in open toed shoes all year so no issue there. I just think it allows for a wider canvas to explore different nail art options. I get tons of compliments from women wherever I go. And I think it’s flirty and fun. It’s just a win-win-win. Give it a shot, and don’t just follow the naysayers, girl. You gotta be you. God Bless. P.S. my boyfriend has no problem with them and is just happy that I’m happy.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@LexiAnn84 They did look pretty, but my poor toes are so abused, I’m just too active to not worry about ripping them off. And I dont live in warm climate, I need my shoes and boots.
But I bet yours are beautiful!

LexiAnn84's avatar

I am super proud of you for trying it! It shows a lot about your character and willingness to try new things. Maybe down the road you may feel like trying again. (Maybe if you go somewhere warm for a quick winter trip!) Thank you for being nice on my first day.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@LexiAnn Well welcome, I had no idea it was your first day!

We have a great little community, mostly liberal, and we all enjoy good debate. Looking forward to getting to know you. ;)
