Do you have any advice or support for me making black eyed peas in crock pot?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24986points) August 1st, 2019

Will be ready in 5 hours. Is 5:15am here and will be ready at 10:15am mountain standards time. Just cooking a large handfull of black eyed peas in crock pot with just water as an experiment.
The Google said that I don’t need to soak them overnight if I use the crock pot.

Wish me luck.
I only have chicken legs , baloney and cheese bavarians both beef and pork and beef. As meat to add to the meal.
Edit: I will soak them in the crock pot for 24 hours and buy some pig feet to add.

Pig feet? Interesting. That sounds more redneck than I am haha.

Did you change out the water? I would. Takes any dirt, rocks, etc…out so you dont ingest. Next time maybe try hamhocks.

@KNOWITALL Sorry I ment ham hocks. I thought they were the same thing.

I will try some pork bavarians with the peas after they soak for 24 hours at 5:30am. In the crock pot.

Sorry is black eyed beans. Not black eyed peas.

@RedDeerGuy1 Same thing dear, we in the south call them black-eyed peas though. I’d be laughed out of town calling them beans…haha!

@KNOWITALL I just got back from the grocery store. I got two packs of two ham hocks. Will cook them in the morning after the black eyed beans are soaked in the crock pot over night.

Sounds yummy! Just cook them slooooowwwww…..

When I make co’n bread n beans, after they warm up initially, I pour the frothy water out and put in fresh water. Also just a touch of baking soda to counter the gas. After that I add my pork, salt, celery, whatever.
But your black eyed peas may not froth the way pinto beans do.

Also, careful about adding spices. As it boils down the spice tastes get lots stronger.

@KNOWITALL I’ve never made black eyed peas. Are they much different than pinto beans?

Here is a Basic Recipe for cooking black eyed peas in a crock pot.

This Recipe also has ham, bacon, and tomato.

@Dutchess Nope. I only make them on New Years for luck, they taste like dirt to me.

Update: Cooking black eyed beans with ham hocks in the crock pot . Will be ready in one hour or so. Is 6:09am here.

Update: Pork hocks were perfect. Beans need to cook longer.

Update. Beans were stale and yucky. I will not buy again. Have some uncooked beans that might end up chucking in the garbage. Might experiment with canned beans and pork in the future.
