It is a replacement for mama’s bosom.
For our spine. The pillows help support our head and neck. When I was younger I could sleep without a pillow and not much damage was done, but now that I have injured disks in my neck, if I sleep without a pillow 9 times out of 10 I’ll be in a lot of pain by morning, and risk the pain lasting for days.
Even without an already existing injury, no pillow means more risk of getting a pinched nerve or some sort of crick in your neck. Lay on your side, and put your head down on the mattress, one side of your neck is kind of hyperextended, because your shoulder lifts your body away from the mattress. So, it partly depends on the position you sleep in.
Also, people with GERD and other digestive problems sometimes do better if their head is elevated when they sleep.
Cuz they are like soft pluffy clouds.
In case we dream of eating giant marshmallows, we’ll have something to eat in our sleep as we dream this.
Because not everyone owns a Basset Hound.
It’s so the person you’re making love to can see you better. And kiss you better. And it cushions your head from banging up against the headboard. And when the cherry falls off your cigarette it doesn’t burn a hole in the mattress.
And it keeps your spine aligned nicely for a good night’s sleep.
“Because not everyone owns a Basset Hound.”
That explains all the bad in the world.
It never protected me from banging my head. Activity always caused the pillow to end up on the floor.
It is a good place to hide my gun.
Twelve year olds need them for kissing practice.
They are good for making it look like old people died from natural causes.
Pillow fights are funner than blanket fights.
What else would you throw at a bat that flies in the window?
A good help with monthly cramps is to lie on the floor with a pillow under the knees.
When the world just – won’t – GO – AWAY!
Me either @josie. Other animals don’t seem to need one. But life is better with them.
It is strictly a marketing ploy. People ate brainwashed by the advertising to believe they “need” pillows.
I have had pets that wanted a pillow, resting their head on a shoe, dropped jacket, rumpled rug, etc.
So, do you sleep with a pillow @YARNLADY? Or did you break free from the marketing ploy?
We animals seem to gravitate to it don’t we @Patty_Melt. Still wondering why….
^^^ I sleep on a 2” foam pad inside a pillow case. I hate those fat, fluffy pillows that make you sleep sitting up.
I just wonder if there is an actual, physical benefit to them and why we didn’t discover this 1 million years ago.
Primates have been using pillows of one kind or another for a few million years. And yeah, there’s a physical benefit – to support the head and neck.
It was in an article I read several years ago. I’m not about to spend what’s left of my evening scouring for a link that may or may not exist, only for you to dismiss it because it doesn’t fit your preconceived notions.
@YARNLADY That’s a pillow. It’s just a homemade pillow.
My pillows aren’t very fat. I have two thin ones.
@Darth_Algar You are silly. Here is an interesting article on chimps and beds I found while looking for the article you may have read.
Here is a source from, OMG, Quora! It’s interesting, if not very scientific and all over the board.
Because all my husbands left. Pillows are all I can cuddle Now.
