Anyone having a hard time as I am in researching an Ancestor with sketchy information?

Asked by Inspired_2write (14486points) August 16th, 2019

Located a Death Registration with Dates of both birth and death, address last lived at,parents birthplaces with just———-, Austria.
Scribbled penmanship of the Town or City of Birth?
Cant locate the Birth record until I know more information on the parents names when they married?
Have two researchers on Facebook ( Austria and Ukrainian Groups) since the timeline suggests that the area was ruled until 1914 by Austria as it invaded the area now known as Ukraine.
At least I know that he lived in Canada from 1901 – 1938 ( he passed away in 1938 at age 60 years old.
My late in laws had very little to share on anything more?
One photograph of the Grandfather was so badly deteriorated that no one could repair it to actually view a facial image?
Surely in that time many relations sent photographs of events such as marriages, births, celebrations?
I have little to go on and will wait a few days for results from the Ukrainian researcher who might locate the Birth record based only on his name and birth date in 1878. This researcher also informed me today that the deciphered scribbled place name was in the Chortkiv District of Ukraine and that yes it was under Austria rule to 1914. I will try Canada Information Act to see if I can obtain a file on him as 81 years had passed to qualify.

Information from before 1900 is difficult everywhere, because of handwriting, general illiteracy, and inconsistent spellings.

My father hired a genealogist in the 1980s to research his family in Scotland. They went as far back as his grandparents, but there were no records other than his father’s birth record (which had his grandparent’s name on it), no record of births, no re rods befor 1875.

Is this ancestor perhaps Jewish? There is a very active group (Jewish Genealogy Assoc.) that publishes an excellent quarterly journal (Avotaynu) and that area – Ukraine, pre-revolutionary Russia, etc. – is right in their ballpark.

see this

No guarantees, but worth examining.

@elbanditoroso
Thanks for your referral.
I don’t think so as they were Lutheran or something similar?
I have researched my side of the family back to 1600“s and never encountered one where so little was to go on?
Frustrating for sure, will wait and see if I get a positive response from Facebook groups in the meantime.
DNA had been submitted but nothing as yet?

@zenvelo
Re Scotland research ..there is always new developments as most Archives had not digitalized ALL of there holdings until now .
Also DNA with FamilytreeDNA.com helps.
I refer to that website for DNA as they are the only one that DOES NOT share with the rest of the world. ( unless one chooses too)?
Also to note that yes one can obtain online records back to 1600’s even 12th century as I have found online records in France online ( birth records, marriage, Death and much more like property, census records etc
I am presently blocked until France finishes digitizing all there archives that were wasting away in there basements. Supposed to be available in 2020 to the public.

My brother in law is a wiz with it. He found we have a famous relative and that persons tree was complete so it was just a matter of linking that tree to ours. That tree went all the way back to Charlemagne.

Yes,. I am interested in finding my biological father because I have never met him. I was kidnapped as a baby from my mother’s side of the family before she 0aaaed away. Anyway, I went all my life wondering who my father is. I don’t u understand why no one felt the need for me to no my father. I have tried Ancestry with no luck because they make it so difficult to use the site. Maybe it’s not in God’s plan for me but it doesn’t take away the feelings I get sometimes.

Whoooo Hoooooo! Update:
Researcher on Facebook ( Ukrainian Genealogy)
located the ancestors birth registered.
The date was off as it is normal within 5 – 10 yrs differences.
He was not born in March 22 1878 but rather Feb 22 1880!
and not Probizna but spelled ; PROBIZHNA , in Chortkiv Region of Ukraine.
Austria ruled that area until 1914 and it later became Ukraine.

His parents names were listed as well and I have that researcher checking for there marriage document l in order to research further back on there origins.
This is a breakthrough that had kept the families searching for over many years!

@Gizzy11
Perhaps submit your DNA to locate?
Many adopted people find there families this way successfully.
I suggest FamilytreeDNA.com site as they are the only one to NOT share your information with other companies etc
The only sharing is within that website members and ‘if” a person decides on there own to share with other companies ,of which familytree company does not recommend.
Many share with Gedcom….I don’t as its worldwide and can be hacked.
Good Luck, all is not lost, keep trying.

@ARE_you_kidding_me
Be very careful in copying pedigrees on some sites ( especially Ancestry.com ) as none had done the research and have no document sources to check into. Most it was found, just copied someone else info pedigree and accepted that as there own.
Always have the sources listed, then you are sure of correct information / pedigree.

@Inspired_2write This was not one of the web services. There is no doubt how that link connects.
