Printer problems with linux can you help me?

Asked by Trance24 (3311points) August 27th, 2008

Ok I have linux on my computer in which the printer is hooked up to. My grandparents computer is in the living room which has windows. I need to connect her computer to the printer in my room just like it was before I had linux. Their computer can not find the printer that is connected to my computer. I have no idea why. But it needs to be fixed before they kill me.

I know less than nothing about Linux… except that driver problems can be frustrating.

Anyways, make sure you’ve got the appropriate printer driver installed.

What type of linux? You’ll probably need to share the printer through samba. You can share it to a windows computer no problem but there are a couple of steps involved.

If you tell me exactly what version of linux you have, I’ll tell you how to set it up.

Go to add a printer and network printer and try this first:
“Connect to a printer on the Internet or on a home or office network:”
ipp://youriphost:631/printers/yourprintersname

That’ll be the most un-obtrusive way first. If that doesn’t work you’ll need to install Samba and CUPS which will vary depending on your distro.
