How could anyone find something so horrific as funny?
I watched Roll Red Roll on Netflix and I can’t shake it. It is a nightmare. It was about the Steubenville High School rape case. High School kids partying. A 14 year old girl just got wasted and passed out. Several of the boys raped her and performed other sexual acts on her unconscious body. They carried her to two other parties where the abuse continued.
Some of them appeared to find it just hilarious.
WTF is wrong with them? How could any human being find this to be casually funny? How could any human being even DO such a thing?

Utterly horrible, and only possible by people who have shut off part of themselves.
It’s not that a whole person would rationally consider something funny.
Humor is one of the ways people react to horrible things that they can’t bear to process seriously.
In the case of violent perpetrators, that can make their behavior seem even more horrifying and monstrous and incomprehensible.
Oh crap… I wrote a long and really great (I thought) edited version, and Fluther’s “you waited too long” logic destroyed it. :-P I should’ve used another editor, or posted it as a second answer, or cut & paste the text before trying to save changes. Oh well.
Oh, I hate it when that happens. After it gets to a certain length I copy it into Word and finish up in there.
This might help you understand why people do what they do. Though it’s not the same, it’s worse.
That was weird! It sent me to my Netflix account. Where does this link send you @anniereborn?
I’ve been seeing Mindhunters come across the screen. Never watched an episode though. I check it out it a bit.
It sends me to the Netflix official page for the show. I really find it so very interesting. It’s a well done show.
It was weird because it sent me specifically to my account.
Anyway, I’ll check it out tonight.
Oh that’s wild! The first episode is set in Wichita! Has to be BTK, but I don’t know yet. I paused it to come write this.
Stupid is as stupid does. And she’s not my sister, my mother, my girlfriend, my aunt, my grandmother, so I don’t care. Out of sight, out of mind. Literally.
So why did you bother to comment?
I think what @kritiper means is, even if its based on a true event, what is seen in a movie is just a movie. Its not someone you personally know, so it doesn’t affect you.
Horror is the same way. We don’t care what Freddy Krueger does because its just a movie. Although we are entertained by human suffering, its not someone we know, not someone real to us, so it’s entertainment.
I understand the gist of it, but I am not in agreement with it. Especially if it is something that really DOES happen, or did happen.
@Zaku said it best, for the horror/humor correlation: Humor is one of the ways people react to horrible things that they can’t bear to process seriously.
It wasn’t a movie. It is a documentary. That is exactly what happened.
Well, that’s why some people find it entertainment and humor.
I don’t enjoy that type of thing at all. I don’t understand how this stuff continually happens, and also, deaths from hazing. Gang rape with drugs is a truly heinous crime and violation. Too much responsibility is given to young men who can’t live in reality yet. The problem is, a new “crop” comes in that hasn’t learned their lesson yet because previously they were too young to pay attention.
Drugs, immaturity, opportunity, and some really big egos come into play. Then once the crime is committed, justice becomes politicized.
@Yellowdog ^^ Nailed it. If I didn’t comment, how would you have any other response for comparison?
And I can’t believe all they got was a year. They took videos and pictures and freaking posted them online.
That poor girl.
(In my prior posts, I attempted to answer from the viewpoint of someone who would “find something so horrific as funny,” not that I would condone such actions, which I don’t.)
Mindhunters is pretty intetesting. It’s set in the 70s so they don’t have computers.
However, they are all fictional accounts. Roll Red Roll actually happened.
Do you mean on Mindhunter? Those are all scripted after the real serial killers.
I was waiting to hear that but didn’t. At what point do they tell us that?
I researched more on Wiki and I see that they are scripted after real serial killers. Shudder.
Our world is full of extremely disturbed folks. Look at the recent comments from Bill Maher about David Koch’s death. He “joked” that he hoped he was cremated and his ashes were blown into some child’s lungs. He stated he was glad Mr. Koch was dead and hoped the death was painful. Pretty horrific when you think about it. Certainly heartless. Yet the audience cheered. That is the sort of thing people love these days.
For starters, these slimeballs, I mean people, have stopped thinking of their victims as human beings. To them, the girl was just an object, and you can make all sorts of jokes about objects. They were also probably high on something, which would impair their thinking.
Those are some pretty nasty things to say, even if Koch as an asshole.
Ah! It just flashed on Park City, KS. BTK for real.
You know what’s freaky? My sister lived in Park City for about 3 years. This was before they caught him. It’s a tiny little community.
Yes. That was the first episode I think. Fascinating how much the actors look just like the actual criminals.
If it’s the same guy I read about in Wiki, he had an IQ of 145. Astonishing.
Why do the episodes keep opening with BTK for a couple minutes before going through the intro, and then focusing on not BTK but different killers?
@Dutchess_lll That’s part of the plot that you have learn as it unfolds :)
@seawulf575: Your description of Maher’s comments is not accurate.
I already KNOW the plot of BTK! I lived through it. I do like the show, though. Sure is a lot of graphic sex though. And lots and lots of F bombs. That’s how you know when a program is testosterone driven.
He exaggerated, the way conservatives do to make themselves feel more important than they really are @jca2, but it was somewhat accurate.
Yeah that part was accurate, @Dutchess_III, but the part about the child’s lungs was not.
According to USA Today (which I linked above) he did say that. :( “He continued, “As for his remains, he has asked to be cremated and have his ashes blown into a child’s lungs.” Guess I should hunt down a video to see for myself.
@Dutchess_III There’s gonna be a lot of F bombs when they are talking to serial killers. I feel when a show is “testosterone driven” you see a lot of shooting and things blowing up. I don’t remember the sex being graphic, but maybe I am just jaded :p
@jca2 So you are splitting hairs as to accuracy? Here’s a thought…he made jokes about that stuff. He did say he was glad Koch was dead and that he hoped the end was painful. And the crowd cheered. Maybe to a liberal, these things are funny. I find them pretty horrific, actually. And to make jokes about stuff like that is completely tasteless. But we know the majority of his audience is liberals, so it sells.
I didn’t see where he said he hoped it was painful.
I agree with you. It was in very bad taste.
@Dutchess_III It was the last thing he said on your clip before the end.
I found it. Very uncool.
(Notice I don’t trip all over myself to explain away something so nasty the way trump supporters do.)
