Do any of you living in the northern US or Canada, plan on trying to see the northern lights this weekend?

Asked by Brian1946 (32638points) August 31st, 2019

If so, please consider taking some photos to share with us underprivileged southerners. ;-)

Here’s a map of the expected auroral band.

You talking to me !??
It’s cloudy here right now but if it clears up tonight I sure will take a look ,problem is I have no camera good enough for night use,sorry.
The Northern lights have put on a show in the past that I actually had to pull over shut the truck off and just take in the show for about twenty minutes.

@Travis Bickle

Yes, you’re one of those northerners to whom I’m talking. ;-)

I’ve taken decent night photos with a mere flip phone, so if it’s convenient, please give it a try.

If I like the photo, I promise to fly up there and rotate all 30 tires on your rig. ;-p

Too far south, I’m in North Carolina.

No. Too bright outside in the middle of the city.

@RedDeerGuy1

Can your mom drive you to someplace outside the city?

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@Brian1946 No. She doesn’t have a car. I’ve seen it before in Jasper National Park 6 years ago. It’s OK to miss it. I will look outside tonight for it. Thanks for the heads up. I hope that the Carrington Event from 1859 doesn’t fry all the electronics

It’s a bit cloudy here in my part of Wisconsin. I’m hoping it clears up.

There was an article in the Atlantic a few months ago, about the Northern Lights. They said it’s not as vivid as it’s often portrayed in photos, because the photographers use enhancement apps to brighten and speed up the lights in their photos.

I’m in Idaho but too far south.

Wow! I am on the south shore of Lake Ontario – right along the edge of the white zone on the posted Auroral Band Map. I will definitely look!
Thanks for pointing this out!!!

Too Cloudy here in Jasper National Park, and raining.

It’s sunny today and I’ve heard tonight is our best chance. I follow several photographers on Facebook from northern Wisconsin and the UP of Michigan and they’ve been posting beautiful pics from the past two nights. My husband and I will be heading to the lake tonight to see if we can see anything.

Yesterdays news…a meteorite fell in clear sky an a bright light shone around it in a major city
( Edmonton, Alberta) and could be seen in other Towns as well.
The experts stated that if was a smaller chunk of a meteorite that possible fell.
Interesting that they announced to the general public to check there Door security cameras as some had shots of it coming down? Several Towns sent in there security camera results and with that the experts can plot its course to locate where it landed.
Apparently its worth a lot of money to scientists who want to study its properties.

Imagine if someone had the meteorite chunk in their yard, how cool that would be, @Inspired_2write? Unless of course it crashed through their roof, then it wouldn’t be so cool haha.

@jca2
Here there are meteorite hunters who search in farmers fields to make money.
One man got $4000 for a medium sized chunk.
