What makes Steely Dan’s songs sound so cool?

They. are a blend of pop and modern jazz. Jazzy guitar and keyboard riffs with pop lyrics, and use of more exotic, non rock instruments like marimbas and clarinets and stand up bass.. plus they were meticulously recorded.

Exactly right. Notice the songs are rarely covered. It’s the performance that makes them so remarkable. Perfect blend of pop and jazz.

My iPod has everything from the great years. I suggest Aja, Deacon Blues, FM, Do It Again, and Bhodisafra.

I think only two guys created the music, in a studio, with tape recorders, the required instruments, and a Moog synthesizer.
