And, to round out the trio of “giving” Questions, what charities do you regularly support?

Asked by canidmajor (21589points) September 14th, 2019

Please DON’T tell me about ones you don’t like, or why this or that person should not donate to the ones they like, I am really only interested in the positive differences we can make with our currency.
I generally donate to St Judes, Love 146, and I rotate on a few others, some local, some national, and always the ACLU.

Mainly we support our church. The church has a fund for supporting a number charities including food bank, backpacks for kids, feeding the homeless and needy, and a local pregnancy center that offers all sorts of assistance for unplanned pregnancies. We also donate our time as well as our money to many of these efforts.

I don’t donate to anything regularly. I don’t have a lot of money to spare at the moment, being a student and working part-time. I donate sporadically, often to environmental causes (I donated a lot in the wake of major wildfires in California the past couple years). I also make occasional donations to charities through the Catholic Church.

I support 5 main causes/organizations.

1) A Prostate Cancer support group that does great work helping guys and their caretakers with the disease. 100% of the funds go to the program . There is no paid staff and the Drectors all work for free. (I have also selected them for my Smile.amazon donations. 0.5% of my purchases go to the organization.)
2) The local women’s shelter, Willow Domestic Violence Center, a cause I learned about from one of the jellies here.
3) The Rochester Academy of Science. The money goes to support student research projects . 100% of the funds go to programs. The Directors and officers all work for free.
4) The local NPR (National Public Radio) station WXXI.
5) The local Fire department
Others sporadically or as needed.

I do not use a middle man to make donations. That way I am sure 100% the funds go where I want.

Since seawulf did it, I will. Christians are NOT encouraged to discuss good deeds, so not to be taking glory from it being Gods gifts, not ours. We feel grateful to help others, as it helps heal us.

Local official charities like @seawulf. I’ve volunteered for Alzheimers Assoc bike rides, Special Olympic races etc., project grad at the local school, missions at local churches, donated to the local childrens home. Does not include some workplace charities or local rotary events for PBS, etc..

I also redistribute personally from my home from donators to kids and families. Like baby stuff, toys, clothes, shoes etc…

A few of the town ladies and I buy for a locals as need arises. School supplies, school clothes, haircuts. Its hard to pick families but usually God puts them in front of us, its pretty cool.

Last month a kid needed help, saw it on facebook. I got to go shopping with a 13 yr old boy!! Fun for me! 6’5” 200 lbs, and it literally made me cry to see him so happy after the haircut and clothes. He finally looked me in the eyes after treating him like a human, unlike his jailbird mom. These kids steal your heart.
