Why has advertising gone off the deep end with smart or intelligent push?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23475points) September 26th, 2019

From vehicles to phones.
Buy this with intelligent smart technology .
Is this so great because then we can relax and go back to being as dumb as mud, and let this smart technology do the thinking for us?

Heaven forbid we have to get up and turn the heat up, or the a.c down, much better to just say a command and have it done for us.
And have a vehicle stop for us before we hit something thank goodness because we are way to stupid to drive, it takes our attention away from texting or Facebook thank goodness the vehicle does it for us.

Wouldn’t it be weird if Picard had to load up the viewscreen manually to talk to ailens. Maybe even with the Windows logo for twenty seconds.

It isn’t advertising, but it is product design. And people want to be able to exert control over devices from their phone because it is convenient.

@SQUEEKY2 Are you ready to give up your TV remote? and your answering machine?

People rely way too much on all that stuff.
That being said, we finally got a cellphone after 10 years of going without one.I figure if I am going to continue to roll in a 54 year old car, it might be a good thing to carry.
Then again I could take the newer car (36 YO)
(laughs very loudly) :)

Oh, @SQUEEKY2, advertising has always been thus with everything. Are you old enough to remember color TV advertising in the 60s? All the push for lighter weight, high mpg cars in the 70s? If the technology is there and available, the advertising industry will be right there. Now they are advertising smart stuff, next year they may be pushing low-carbon-footprint lawnmowers.

Its marketing and they are making money.

The other 98% of the population is buying smartphones.

They are advertising where the population is. The 2% that don’t have smartphones aren’t even interesting to the advertising companies.

I think there is good reason for concern about the loss of basic skills which we presently deem necessary and widely distributed throughout the society.

I guess my real concern with this so called smart technology are we losing basic skills such as driving as we adapt more and more to vehicles that do it for us?

Ah, so it’s not a Q about advertising, but another rant about tech you don’t like. Got it. Frankly, I’m grateful I don’t have to ride a horse everywhere, I’m old and short and arthritic. Yay cars.

I recently rented a car for a trip, and the car had some technology that my four year old CRV doesn’t have. It had alarms when you’d change lanes, if there was another car already in that lane, or a car coming into your lane. Very handy. I am still the great driver that I always was, but this was a little helper that I felt was really good to have. Same with backup cameras, which my car has and I think probably the majority of cars have now. If it saves a life, it’s a good thing. As the population ages, as the baby boomers get older and stiffer and maybe it’s harder for them to turn around all the way, and look, now with backup cameras it makes it a bit easier and definitely a lot safer.

Do these things make me a dumb driver? I don’t believe so. Do they make the car safer, whether I’m in my 20’s or my 70’s? Yes. So that’s a good thing.

Think of the technology that is now commonplace. Voicemail, computers, WiFi. At one time, someone old and crotchety thought of it as newfangled and unnecessary. Now, I’m betting 99.9% of the population doesn’t use an answering machine, because voicemail is given free with most phones. 99.9% of the population has used a computer and can do it with ease.
