Have you been accused of being a traitor to your identity?

Asked by Demosthenes (15328points) October 4th, 2019

I’m thinking along the lines of women who voted against Hillary being told they’re betraying all women, black and Hispanic people who voted for Trump being called “race traitor/Uncle Tom”, etc. This doesn’t just have to be political or racial. Perhaps you were accused of not being a true Christian because you are okay with same-sex marriage (something that happened to a friend of mine).

Has anyone ever implied that, through your actions or opinions, you were somehow doing a disservice to a group you identify with?

This kind of thing is how you can see who the true bigots are.

Oh yes, I was accused of singlehandedly causing the downfall of the US political system because I voted 3rd party in the 2016 election. I didn’t see the person as a bigot, but did laugh at the ignorance it took to try & spin that one out!!! I used to care what others said about me; but over the years, I’ve learned to just IGNORE such ignorance!!! People are entitled to their opinions. Just because I don’t agree with them, it doesn’t mean that they aren’t entitled to voice them…it’s a GREAT way to learn who to leave out of your friends pool as some people just aren’t worth the effort!!!

Not me personally, but I witnessed my boss telling another female employee that she HAD to vote for Hillary because she was a woman. I was stunned that she was that stupid to say that kind of thing in an office setting.

Not personally but I know Jewish people online who feel that any criticism of Israel’s politics is an anti-semite even if they are Jewish.

I don’t vote based on someone’s gender.
Many of my family members speak French, I am not considered a traitor because I don’t.
If they do, I wouldn’t care anyway. I don’t meet many people that think like that.

I thought only assholes like Nazis and the Klan would talk that way.
And who would admit to that even if it were true

@josie You’d think, but I’ve heard it from some surprising sources. It’s one of those “true colors” moments. I don’t think it’s all that common, but there are definitely some people (not just Klan/Nazis) who believe you owe it to your identity to believe and do certain things.

@janbb Apparently some gentiles criticize Jews for that too.

I see it all the time but I’m an average white guy so I’m not even supposed to have an identity.

@ARE_you_kidding_me True dat :) Or at least you’re supposed to be ashamed of it.

Of course, its consistant in abortion, LGBTQ issues, immigration, etc…I get called names for my beliefs by both parties. I have no problem being outside the lines of the parties.
