Has anyone ever found a painted rock while out and about?

Asked by lucillelucillelucille (34325points) October 5th, 2019

I came home from a weekend away to find that the big tree in front of my house fell and took out my dock.
Near the hole where the tree once stood was a rock with a tree painted on it.
I told my brother about it and he said that while walking a pebble strewn beach, he happened to look down and saw a pebble with the words “Turn me over” written on it.
The underside said, “Thanks!”
Ever find one of these rocks?

My little town is full of them. In some areas, rock painting is very trendy.

Our neighbor’s dad does woodworking and surprised us with a fairy door on the tree out front. Complete with tiny little stained glass windows.

Whimsy seems to attract more whimsy. We keep finding painted rocks by the fairy door.

@canidmajor -Apparently, there are groups for this.

MrGrimm888's avatar

Haven’t come across them…

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@MrGrimm888 -It’s a strange thing. I still do not know who left it.

MrGrimm888's avatar

@lucillelucilleluciIle . Thats what’s cool about the rock….

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@MrGrimm888 – A little mystery can be good or really creepy.lol
The one I found was charming & kind of funny despite the mangled dock.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

Found one hiking in Phoenix once. Thought it was a neat idea.

MrGrimm888's avatar

LLL. Still sounds cool. Someone took the time to do it, expecting someone to find it.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@MrGrimm888 – I agree!
One of my ceramics teachers told me that he and a buddy would throw ceramic bottles they made,stamped with dates from way back, and throw them in the river and lake for the scuba divers to find.They like to look for treasures here.
I miss that guy .

MrGrimm888's avatar

LLL. I’ve done similar things. But telling you about them, would ruin it….

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@MrGrimm888 – I have a friend that dives that same area. I don’t think he has found any yet. Maybe the current carried them away to a grand mountain of bullshit bottle?
I have yet to do this, but it is very tempting.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^If I told you, it would ruin it…

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@MrGrimm888 – I am going to not ask you, so you’ll spill it. Mwah haa haaaaa! :)

rebbel's avatar

Some weeks ago, while on a secluded little beach on a Greek island, we saw a big boulder with the words written in white paint: “Naked Forbidden”

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@rebbel- You should’ve put your pants on the rock! XD

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille It was a picture of a gecko or something.

Does this count?

Painted rocks are very popular in my sleepy little town. One lady prides herself in her ability to beautify rocks. There are several novices who have joined her. At one point, a local mom & pop store used her services to create a contest for them. The talented lady painted their logo on one side & then a special design on the bottom. IF you found one of their rocks & took it in to them, they’d match the design on the bottom to their chart & you’d win some cash. Of course those who came in to see what they had won, ended up spending some of their winnings before leaving the store. That store has since closed due to the passing of both the owners; but just every so often, someone will find one of the outstanding painted rocks while their out roaming around. It brings back a little bit of nostalgia!!! :)

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@ARE_you_kidding_me – Nice!
@raum- I love it!
@LadyMarissa – What a nice story!

Dutchess_III's avatar

It doesn’t matter who left them! It’s cool as hell. Maybe I’ll do a project like that with my grandkids and we’ll leave them at campsites at the lake. :D

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Dutchess_III -It does if it’s indicative of a psychopathic personality.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Or could be someone just having fun.
Or could be someone who gets a kick out of people being pleasantly surprised. (That would be my motivation.)
Or they could be a psychopathic murdering rapist killer.
Your choice.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Dutchess_III -There is no choice.
I have no doubt that there are those who would write creepy things and because I found it in front of my house, I would be more than a little concerned if I found something with threatening language.

Dutchess_III's avatar

“Turn me over” and “Thanks” sound threatening to you?

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Dutchess_III -It’s mildly interesting how you try to tell me what I am thinking.

JLeslie's avatar

I haven’t, but there is a group (maybe more than one group) who paints them in the community/city where I live in. People post them in Facebook all the time when they find them. I love it.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Those are the only words written on rocks or elsewhere that were mentioned in the details.

@rebbel said he came across a boulder on a beach that said “Naked Forbidden.” I also don’t see that as threatening since it wasn’t dropped off on his doorstep and wasn’t targeted directly to him.

canidmajor's avatar

@Dutchess_III You need some more coffee, you’re obviously misreading the thread.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@JLeslie -I have thought of doing this with ceramics :)
@Dutchess- You: It doesn’t matter who left them!
Me: It does if it’s indicative of a psychopathic personality.

Follow???
@canidmajor – :)

Dutchess_III's avatar

Or better yet, @canidmajor, stop being passive aggressive and simply explain what you mean. What did I miss?

Yes @lucillelucillelucille. If you received some thing disturbing I could understand. But you received a rock with a TREE painted on it. Everyone else thinks it’s cool. You find it disturbing.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Dutchess_III -As much as you like to tell me what my thoughts are, you are so far off, it’s beyond idiotic.
As for creepy experiences I have had? You are not privy to that info and rest assured that you never will be.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Then WHAT are you talking about? When did this thread turn into your past creepy experiences? I’ve had plenty of those myself.
I CAN’T read your mind, so simply tell me what you found threatening? Stop with the passive aggressive shit, please. Just speak up.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Dutchess_III -read the thread again.
When you are done doing that, read it again…
and again….and again.I’ll get you started:

lucillelucillelucille’s avatar

My response to MrGrimm888 –” A little mystery can be good or really creepy.lol
The one I found was charming & kind of funny despite the mangled dock.”

Then and only then, will you understand what my thoughts on painted rocks are.If you can’t follow, comprehend,understand that’s alright by me.
If you are unwilling to re-read the thread or understand the comment I’ve posted, then I can’t or won’t help you anymore.
This is not interesting any longer.
Good luck!

chyna's avatar

@raum I want to se a pic of the fairy door!!!! Please, please, please!!!

flutherother's avatar

I’ve never come across a painted rock apart from a rock on an island near here which is shaped like a crocodile and has been painted with green scales, jaws and teeth.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@flutherother -That is pretty interesting. I like that kind of creativity.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Jaysus. I give up. All I asked was how you found it creepy @lucillelucillelucille, and you can’t seem to answer. I’m out.

canidmajor's avatar

Yup. Needs more coffee. Even explained, she misses.
And I, too, want to see the fairy door!

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Dutchess_III -THANK YOU!! and I mean that sincerely

LadyMarissa's avatar

Naturally works at it!!! LoL

SEKA's avatar

Painting rocks was a faze a few years back and some inevitably made it into the public domain. While out for my morning walk, I have stumbled upon one or two but nothing like what you described. That sounds a bit creepy

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@SEKA – The one that was found by the tree wasn’t creepy.

SEKA's avatar

^ Maybe not to you, but a tree painted on a rock placed at a fallen tree sounds creepy to me

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@SEKA -I suppose some might see it way, but as I stated above, I found it kind of charming and it was a big old tree, so a bit sad at the same time.
How it did not destroy my canoe is a miracle :)
As for the rock my brother found,in the middle of all those other rocks?That is funny to me.
He is definitely one to notice minute detail.

LadyMarissa's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille Be thankful…it just wasn’t your canoe’s time to go!!!

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@LadyMarissa – I was! Lol!
I am not though, sure if part of the tree or a large branch didn’t land on it.
It’s fiberglass, which could be cracked somewhere if that did happen.
At some point, I will have to this test out. I just don’t look forward to going down with the ship.:)

I think some of the rock groups have Facebook groups or pages and when you find the Rick you’re supposed to upload a photo.

kritiper's avatar

I’ve found a couple. Hid them so no one would find them or threw them in the trash.

MrGrimm888's avatar

LLL. You can get those pool noodles, and zip tie them to your seats. Or some other foam. It’ll keep your canoe from completely sinking.
I’m an expert on canoes/kayaks. If you have any questions, hit me up.

As far as painted rocks, or altered things of nature, it seems instinctive, to human beings. Think about all of the cave paintings, and things like that, from thousands of years ago.

raum's avatar

@JLeslie I think Dutch has found Rick.

@MrGrimm888 The Modern Legacy of Lascaux: Painted Rocks :D

MrGrimm888's avatar

^I’m unfamiliar with Lascaux. Can you elaborate?

JLeslie's avatar

Lol. Oops. Rock.

canidmajor's avatar

@MrGrimm888, Lascaux is the most famous site of painted caves.

MrGrimm888's avatar

^Ah… I could have Googled it. But I prefer personal information.

canidmajor's avatar

Do google it, though, it’s pretty fascinating stuff.

MrGrimm888's avatar

I may do that. But I had several classes, in anthropology, in college. That doesn’t mean that I know everything. But, I know a lot about how out species moved around.

raum's avatar

I think the overarching ideas are more important than specifics. Though Lascaux is pretty interesting. Definitely worth a google search.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@MrGrimm888 -Thanks for the info and that is exactly what I will do come spring.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@raum-I traded a fellow potter a piece of my work for one of his pieces. It is a horsehair raku ginger jar with a stag painted in a similar style as those cave paintings in France.It is not obviously painted on it & I did not notice it at first as i was attracted to the shape.
When I did see it, it made me happy.
It is his personality to a tee. :)
